Salary: Dir Credit Adjudication 21: Salaries typically range from $147,760 - $197,013 annually plus a performance-based incentive.

Location: FinDev Canada headquarters is in downtown Montreal. For the right candidate, Ottawa or Toronto will be considered, with the flexibility to work under a hybrid model (home/office).

Position & Team Overview

The Credit & Equity Risk Management Team at FinDev Canada actively reviews transactions with a holistic approach to objectively challenge and opine on financial and non-financial risks, balancing client solutions with sound risk management principles.

As the Director of Credit & Equity Risk Management, reporting to the Chief Risk Officer (CRO), you will lead the development and oversight of credit & equity risk management strategies, policies, processes, and monitoring tools to ensure risks are effectively managed across all portfolios and aligned with the corporation’s risk appetite, regulatory requirements, and strategic objectives. This role also supports the second line oversight of market, liquidity, capital, and model risks. Strong technical skills are required for detailed review of complex transactions across all strategic sectors and markets, with the breadth of experience required to depict correlations, trends, concentrations, and emerging risks at the portfolio level.

In this role, you will build and lead a diverse team, fostering a culture of technical excellence and precision. Your strong business judgment, diplomatic skills, and ability to manage multiple demands will be key to your success. Your leadership will be instrumental in maintaining and developing excellent internal partner relationships, supporting the growth of FinDev Canada’s portfolio, and delivering timely and insightful advice to the business.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Team Leadership & Management: Lead and guide the Credit & Equity Risk Management Team, ensuring alignment with FinDev Canada’s mandate. You’ll be responsible for hiring, motivating, training, and developing a high-performing team.
  • Risk Analysis & Surveillance: Lead deep dives into risk assessments prepared by various parties, ensuring thorough credit surveillance and precise risk quantification for each transaction. Guide and help teams establish sound monitoring tools for portfolio oversight and early warning detections. Opine on risk ratings and equity valuations (outcomes, models, methodologies) to ensure accurate measurement of risks.
  • Independent Review & Authorization: Take charge of reviewing, assessing, and authorizing complex transaction proposals. Balance credit/equity risks, policy requirements, and client needs across diverse sectors and markets. Review and opine on transaction terms & conditions within contractual agreements.
  • Valuation & Risk Mitigation: Provide expert opinions on the valuation and quality of risk mitigants and security structures, with a keen understanding of the unique characteristics of FinDev Canada’s product lines and industrial sectors.
  • Transaction Summaries & Recommendations: Provide and oversee the creation of independent authorization summaries and recommendations. Your expertise will drive informed decision-making processes that align with our strategic goals.
  • Risk Management Expertise: Provide expert advice to your team and business partners. Guide them on deal structures, risk acceptability, policy interpretation, and the authorization process, fostering a culture of excellence and innovation.
  • Decision-Making: Operate within defined authority parameters to make independent authorization decisions, considering both financial and non-financial transaction risks. Your decisions will be instrumental in steering our organization towards sustainable growth.
  • Guideline Development: Contribute to the creation and refinement of underwriting guidelines by providing expert insights and recommendations. Your input will help shape the future of our financial risk management practices, ensuring they remain robust and forward-thinking.

What We Are Looking For

Must-haves
  • Master’s Degree with a specialization in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, or equivalent
  • Minimum 15 years combined experience in credit, equity, and risk management functions in the context of emerging & developing markets across diverse sectors
  • Minimum 5 or more years’ experience in leading teams (leadership roles)
  • Advanced experience in a financial institution and deep product knowledge, including term loans, revolving loans, trade facilities, syndicated loans, equities, funds, bonds, grants, parallel loans and guarantees
  • Advanced experience reading and interpreting financial statements with strong risk analysis and quantification skills, experience developing risk management policies and limits, experience overseeing a diverse transaction portfolio
  • Advanced knowledge of capital risk management, risk models, stress testing, scenario analysis, and portfolio monitoring.
  • Advanced knowledge of risk governance best practices based on 3LD principles, including committee structures, approval processes, delegations of authority, and escalation procedures
  • Excellent networking and relationship management skills
  • Excellent problem solving, people and conflict management, communication and presentation skills
  • Bilingual in both official languages (French and English).
Nice-to-Haves
  • Prior experience working specifically at a development finance institution (DFI) or a multilateral development bank (MDB)
