A governmental organization is seeking a Custodian in Iqaluit to maintain a safe and sanitary environment for students and staff. The incumbent will ensure that the school is prepared for occupancy daily and will conduct various cleaning tasks including handling hazardous materials. Ideal candidates will have Grade 6 education or equivalent experience, and must complete a WHMIS course for certification. This position requires a satisfactory criminal record check and prioritizes Nunavut Inuit applicants.
Reporting to the Principal, the Custodians are responsible for maintaining a sanitary and safe environment for the students and staff of the school. The incumbent plays a significant role in maintaining the operations and functionality of the school and supporting a learning environment that is conducive to student success.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through the completion of Grade 6 education or equivalent life experience. The ability to properly handle the hazardous materials in use within the school, and how to properly dispose of hazardous waste materials. Other skills required for this position include proper cleaning and lifting techniques and the use of specific cleansers for various surfaces. The candidate must also be skilled in the use of cleaning equipment such as industrial vacuum cleaners and buffers and must also be able to complete the WHIMS course for certification. This is a Highly Sensitive Position and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, along with a clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.
The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross‑cultural environment are also considered assets.
