Job summary

A governmental organization is seeking a Custodian in Iqaluit to maintain a safe and sanitary environment for students and staff. The incumbent will ensure that the school is prepared for occupancy daily and will conduct various cleaning tasks including handling hazardous materials. Ideal candidates will have Grade 6 education or equivalent experience, and must complete a WHMIS course for certification. This position requires a satisfactory criminal record check and prioritizes Nunavut Inuit applicants.

Job description

This employment opportunity is restricted to Nunavut Inuit who reside in Iqaluit only.

Reporting to the Principal, the Custodians are responsible for maintaining a sanitary and safe environment for the students and staff of the school. The incumbent plays a significant role in maintaining the operations and functionality of the school and supporting a learning environment that is conducive to student success.

The Custodian’s main responsibilities are, but are not limited to:

• Ensuring that the building is readied for occupancy each day, securing the school at the end of each school day, and maintaining a clean and safe environment on a daily, weekly, and as‑needed basis.
• This includes sweeping, vacuuming, cleaning, washing, disinfecting, scrubbing, wiping, and removing garbage.
• Overseeing hazardous materials as well as ensuring the school is safe and secure and carrying‑out specialized summer cleaning including stripping floors and re‑waxing, shampooing and steam cleaning carpets and rugs, washing interior and exterior windows, washing all walls, cleaning and disinfecting classroom surface areas, cleaning under and behind fridges, stoves and vending machines, and informing the Secretary of maintenance issues.
• Responsible for assisting with supply and basic maintenance and operation of the building by filling and refilling dispensers, notifying administration of burnt‑out lighting, checking playground equipment, carrying‑out minor repairs, assembling new school equipment, maintaining Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) storage, maintaining and inventorying cleaning supplies, picking‑up and delivering freight.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through the completion of Grade 6 education or equivalent life experience. The ability to properly handle the hazardous materials in use within the school, and how to properly dispose of hazardous waste materials. Other skills required for this position include proper cleaning and lifting techniques and the use of specific cleansers for various surfaces. The candidate must also be skilled in the use of cleaning equipment such as industrial vacuum cleaners and buffers and must also be able to complete the WHIMS course for certification. This is a Highly Sensitive Position and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, along with a clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross‑cultural environment are also considered assets.
