Job Summary

Reporting to the Manager of Environmental Services, this position is responsible for supervising the Custodial staff, primarily involved in providing cleaning of the Prince George Campus. This includes general cleaning, periodic project maintenance cleaning (i.e. floor refinishing), and for fixture and furniture set‑ups for college events that can be set up during the night shift. The supervisor exercises considerable independence of action and judgement to ensure the Custodial Division continues to provide quality, timely, and reliable service, and that custodial‑related projects and initiatives are completed successfully and safely.

Specific Duties
  • Provide supervision to Custodial staff.
  • Monitor quality and productivity of work performed by team, based on expectations set by management; by providing positive constructive feedback (both verbally and written) where required.
  • Maintain and update work schedules to ensure adequate staffing and shift coverage.
  • Ensure staff receive orientation, training, and on‑going instruction to a level where they can perform independently.
  • Issue work orders from the computerised maintenance management system to Custodial staff.
  • Assist the Manager in the preparation of Custodial staff appraisals and progress reports.
  • Prepare and update written work instructions for repetitive and/or revised custodial duties.
  • Prepare, schedule, implement, and perform periodic custodial projects (i.e. floor refinishing) and keep such schedules current.
  • Ensure all custodial work is carried out according to priority, predetermined procedures, project schedules and other schedules as approved by Facilities Services Management.
  • Ensure all work is performed in accordance and compliance with all regulatory codes, safety regulations, and legislation.
  • Ensure that all work is carried out with the least amount of disruption to affected areas and the college community.
  • May be required to be on call for emergencies and equipment failure.
  • Assist in applicant screening and selection of new team members.
  • Assist with emergency procedures including but not limited to fire alarms and emergency evacuation.
  • Ensure WHMIS compliance in work area, including keeping an inventory of controlled products, maintaining the MSDS binders, and ensuring containers of controlled products have correct WHMIS labelling.
  • Cover work assignments and/or assist in all aspects of Custodial and Caretaker work, as required.
  • Perform light repairs to custodial equipment beyond the scope of periodic operator equipment maintenance.
  • Monitor and maintain an inventory of supplies and equipment and restock, as required.
  • Make recommendations to Facilities Services Management on best courses of action to resolve issues, ways to improve safety, reduce maintenance and custodial requirements, reduce costs, save time, reduce energy usage, increase service quality, increase productivity, etc.
  • You will be part of a team actively engaged in contributing to and accomplishing the vision, mission, and goals of the College and in supporting the aspirations and needs of our learners.
  • You will promote a positive work atmosphere by interacting and communicating in a professional manner that demonstrates mutual respect with students and colleagues.
  • Other duties as assigned by Manager, Environmental Services or their designate.
Skills & Qualifications
  • High School completion plus additional advanced courses in Building Service Worker 1, 2, and 3 certifications or related training.
  • 5 years or more of institutional custodial experience, of which includes at least 2 years supervisory experience in a unionized environment.
  • Management Skills for Supervisors Certificate; or equivalent formal supervisory training required.
  • WHMIS certification required.
  • Excellent skills and knowledge of the use of custodial equipment and chemicals.
  • Mechanically inclined and has ability to maintain custodial tools and equipment.
  • Ability to use various cleaning techniques and operate ride‑on floor machines and other power cleaning equipment.
  • Proven ability to organize, assign, distribute and check work of other Custodial staff.
  • Must have the ability to interact well with others and resolve conflicts when necessary.
  • Must have and demonstrate excellent communication skills both written and oral.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Physical ability to complete job demands.
  • Elevated work platform certification or the ability to attain within 6 months of appointment.
