The Oyateki Partnership, through the Office of the Vice Provost, Indigenous Engagement, seeks to transform Indigenous youth’s lives. The Building Intercultural Resilience Mentorship (BIRM) Program supports Indigenous youth attending high school. The BIRM Grads Pathways Coordinator will develop and implement a pathways program to help high‑school graduates access mentorship, post‑secondary and career planning, employment, community building, socio‑economic barrier support, and participation in cultural, educational and skill‑building gatherings.

Primary Purpose

This unique position is housed within the Office of the Vice Provost, Indigenous Engagement and is directly connected to the Oyateki Partnership. The coordinator will work with BIRM staff, the Office of the Vice Provost, and external stakeholders to develop the program, assess outcomes, manage student registration, promote the program, and provide one‑to‑one coaching.

Typical Duties or Accountabilities
  • Work closely with team members and stakeholders to identify, develop, and implement programming that enhances Indigenous student access, success, and quality of post‑secondary pathway experiences.
  • Provide guidance and knowledge sharing through relationships founded in Indigenous values and perspectives, and offer 1:1 student support.
  • Assist students in accessing current opportunities and systems for Indigenous youth.
  • Plan and host events/gatherings that respond to participants’ needs and interests.
  • Communicate regularly with participants and engage them on social media.
  • Develop intake, training and program plans for one‑to‑one mentorship in collaboration with the BIRM Director.
  • Visit BIRM school programming to develop relationships with incoming graduates.
  • Contribute to the preparation of reports, documents and communications related to the Oyateki Partnership and the Office of the Vice Provost.
  • Assist students in addressing and navigating barriers to success.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Education

Completion of a post‑secondary degree in a related field such as Social Work or Education is an asset. A combination of education and relevant experience will be considered.

Skills and Competencies

The ideal candidate has strong relationship‑building and communication skills, can work independently and with a team, is an efficient organizer, and has a strong connection to Indigenous culture, values and community. Familiarity with high‑school graduation requirements and a robust understanding of post‑secondary institutions and local opportunities are necessary. The candidate should be able to build community relationships, facilitate group and 1:1 advising, and navigate diverse participant needs. Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook is required; experience with Canva or similar design tools is an asset.

Schedule

The schedule is adaptive to participant and community needs and may require evening and weekend work.
