Job description
Role Overview

veritree is hiring a Controller to fully own the company’s accounting and financial reporting operations and act as the CFO’s primary operational right hand. This role is responsible for the accuracy, integrity, and scalability of all accounting activities across veritree’s commercial entities and its registered charities in Canada and the United States.

The Controller will independently run day‑to‑day finance execution including month‑end and year‑end close, AP, AR, payroll, tax compliance, audits, internal controls, and accounting systems, allowing the CFO to focus on FP&A, strategy, capital, and executive leadership. This is a hands‑on, execution‑first role in a fast‑paced, scaling climate‑tech and SaaS‑enabled organization. Success in this role is defined by operational excellence, judgment, and reliability.

6‑Month Key Outcomes (6mKOs)
  1. Full Operational Ownership: Independently own all accounting operations (AP, AR, payroll, close, tax, audits, controls, systems) with minimal CFO involvement in day‑to‑day execution.
  2. Reliable Close & Compliance: Deliver a timely, accurate month‑end (by working day 5) and year‑end close (no misstatements and within required deadlines) across all entities, including charity reporting.
  3. Customer Segmentation & Revenue Automation: Deploy a new customer segmentation methodology across our tech stack and implement a new revenue automation tool (e.g. SuiteBilling or Maxio) that recognizes revenue and gross margin based on a new revenue recognition policy.
What You’ll Do
Accounting Operations & Close
  • Own the full month‑end and year‑end close process across all entities and charities.
  • Oversee Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Payroll.
  • Review and approve reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, and schedules.
  • Maintain accurate deferred revenue accounting, customer segmentation impacts, and contract‑based accounting workflows.
Gross Margin & Unit Economics
  • Maintain accurate COGS, unit cost, and gross margin reporting
  • Ensure unit economics reflect true underlying costs in partnership with Supply Ops, RevOps, and Product.
  • Support internal reporting that enables operational decision‑making.
Foundation Accounting & Reporting
  • Own day‑to‑day accounting and reporting for two registered charitable foundations (Canada and U.S.) using QuickBooks.
  • Ensure compliance with charity‑specific accounting, reporting, and audit requirements.
  • Coordinate reporting inputs with consolidated finance outputs.
Audit, Tax & Compliance
  • Lead the annual financial statement audit end‑to‑end.
  • Manage income tax and indirect tax (e.g. GST/PST) filings and documentation.
  • Coordinate external auditors and tax advisors; respond to ad‑hoc audits (grants, compliance) as required.
Systems, Controls & Process Ownership
  • Act as owner of the ERP, ensuring data integrity across multi‑entity, multi‑currency, and dimensional reporting structures.
  • Maintain QuickBooks environments for charities and ensure alignment with consolidated reporting.
  • Design, document, and enforce internal controls and accounting policies.
  • Drive process improvements and automation to increase reliability and reduce manual work.
Leadership & Partnership
  • Directly manage and develop the Accounting Staff.
  • Serve as the CFO’s operational right hand, escalating judgment calls, risks, or material issues appropriately.
  • Partner cross‑functionally to ensure Finance enables execution and growth rather than creating friction.
Qualifications
  • CPA designation required (or international equivalent).
  • 7–10+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally in tech / SaaS environments.
  • Strong understanding of deferred revenue, customer segmentation, and contract‑based accounting.
  • Experience producing gross margin and unit cost reporting for productized or service‑based businesses.
  • Proven experience leading audits and managing income tax and indirect tax compliance.
  • ERP experience required; Netsuite and QuickBooks experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience with Float and Beanworks or similar AP automation tools
  • Experience with Netsuite’s SuiteBilling or Maxio revenue automation tools.
  • Highly accountable, hands‑on, and pragmatic with a “roll‑up‑your‑sleeves” mindset.
