Job description
Communications Consultant (Contract)

About Us
ZINC Strategies is a boutique communications consulting firm specializing in local government communications across Vancouver Island and coastal BC. We work with municipalities, regional districts, First Nations, engineering firms, and public sector organizations to develop strategic communications plans, engage communities, and build public trust. Our small team values collaboration, creativity, and making a genuine impact in the communities we serve.

About the Role
We're seeking a Communications Consultant to join our growing team on a 6‑8 month contract with potential to transition to permanent employee status. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with 2‑4 years of communications experience who wants to develop expertise in local government work while contributing to meaningful public sector projects. You'll work directly with municipal clients, create compelling content, and help communities navigate complex communication challenges.

What You’ll Do
Work on diverse local government projects including community engagement strategies, public consultation processes, crisis communications planning, and municipal brand development. Conduct research and stakeholder analysis, write and edit content across multiple channels (web, social media, newsletters, reports, presentations), support public consultation events and community meetings, and develop communication materials for council reports and public‑facing initiatives. Manage project timelines and deliverables, coordinate with clients and community stakeholders, and contribute to strategic planning and recommendations.

Who You Are
You have 2‑4 years of professional communications experience, with some exposure to public sector, government, or community‑focused organizations. You’re an excellent writer who can adapt tone and style for different audiences and purposes, and you understand or are eager to learn about local government processes, public engagement, and municipal decision‑making. You are highly organized with strong project management skills, comfortable working independently and collaboratively in a small team environment, and genuinely interested in public service and community impact. You have a diplomatic approach and can navigate sensitive political environments, bring creative problem‑solving skills, and remain calm under deadline pressure.

Required Skills & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Political Science, or related field
  • 2‑4 years of professional communications experience
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills with portfolio samples
  • Experience with digital communications and social media strategy
  • Strong research and analytical abilities
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and basic design tools
  • Valid BC driver's license and willingness to travel occasionally to client sites across Vancouver Island
Helpful Assets (Good to Have)
  • Experience working with local government, public sector, or non‑profit organizations
  • Knowledge of BC's Local Government Act and municipal governance
  • Familiarity with public consultation methodologies
  • Experience with design software (Canva, Adobe Creative Suite)
  • Bilingual capabilities (English + another language)
What We Offer
  • Schedule: 30 hours per week, Tuesday through Friday (7.5 hours/day)
  • Salary: $48,000 – $60,000 annually (prorated for 6‑8 month contract period)
  • 3 weeks vacation plus additional time off between Christmas and New Year's (prorated)
  • Some flexibility for occasional remote work
  • Professional development budget and support for continuing education
  • Exposure to diverse, high‑impact projects
  • Mentorship and career development in a collaborative team environment
  • Opportunity to make a real difference in local communities
  • Potential to transition to permanent employee status after contract period based on performance and business needs
Work Environment

This is an in‑office position based in Courtenay, BC, working Tuesday through Friday. You'll work primarily from our Courtenay office alongside our collaborative team, with occasional flexibility for remote work as needed. Travel to client sites across Vancouver Island is required periodically (typically day trips). Our small team values face‑to‑face collaboration, mentorship, and building strong working relationships while maintaining work‑life balance and delivering excellent client service.

To Apply

Please submit your resume, cover letter, and 2‑3 writing samples that demonstrate your ability to communicate complex information clearly to diverse audiences. In your cover letter, tell us about your experience with local government communications and what you’d bring to our team.
