About the job

In this Classroom Assistant role, you will:

  • Work with students with severe learning disabilities.
  • Work in a multi‑disciplinary setting.
  • Assist teachers in providing individual and group programs to children with severe learning disabilities.
  • Support and assist students with unique learning needs.
  • Support students within the classroom in completion of assigned work, including work access through technology.
  • Assist teachers in program preparation and materials.
Mandatory requirements
  • Community College certificate and/or equivalent training, education and working experience in a child‑related field.
  • Current certification in CPR and First Aid.
Skills and Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience working with students who have learning disabilities and may have motivation and self‑esteem needs.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing academic and prescribed behaviour management programs in the classroom.
  • Knowledge of education terms and strategies as they relate to students with behavioural and educational exceptionalities.
  • Knowledge of child/adolescent development and an understanding of caring for children and teenagers with learning disabilities.
  • Strong computer skills and experience working with classroom learning technology, assistive technology and personal devices.
  • Able to communicate effectively with students, parents, staff members and other professionals.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, policies, procedures, guidelines and practices that address student care, well‑being and safety.
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving and observation skills to identify students' needs/difficulties.
  • Ability to be an active participant in a multi‑disciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible, manage change and effectively deal with stress.
  • Willingness to take initiative to be proactive within the classroom and assist students with learning disabilities as required.
