About Alberta Operations

Located in Fort Saskatchewan, Dow Canada operates four large‑scale production units specializing in hydrocarbons, ethylene, polyethylene, and electricity. As one of Canada’s largest petrochemical facilities, we support Dow’s global customers while also advancing sustainability initiatives like the Path2Zero (P2Z) program. This groundbreaking initiative aims to create the world’s first net‑zero emissions site, a cornerstone of Dow’s decarbonization strategy.

Role Overview

As a Chemical Processing Operator, you will be instrumental in optimizing plant performance across various units such Hydrocarbons, Solution Polyethylene, Gas Phase Polyethylene, and Power & Utilities. This involves monitoring process equipment, performing field checks, adjusting controls, and ensuring the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible operation of our facilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize plant operations.
  • Operate equipment and adjust control systems manually when necessary.
  • Perform field checks, isolate and prepare equipment for maintenance.
  • Follow Dow’s Life Critical Standards and operating discipline to ensure safety and reliability.
  • Participate in Emergency Response Brigade training, including fire and rope rescue activities.
  • Work in a team‑oriented environment and contribute to plant commissioning efforts.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to respond to emergencies and work in stressful environments (e.g., confined spaces, low visibility).
  • Frequent lifting of materials weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Capability to work at varying heights and wear all required personal protective equipment.
Facility‑Specific Highlights
  1. Hydrocarbons:
    • Fractional distillation, cracking furnaces, cryogenic processes, and water treatment.
    • Opportunity to progress toward 3rd and 2nd Class Power Engineer certification.
    • Teams of 10+ operators.
  2. Solution Polyethylene:
    • Production via reaction and catalyst in solution phase.
    • Safe operation of flammable hydrocarbons and vacuum systems.
    • Teams of 6 operators; training hours count toward 3rd Class certification.
  3. Gas Phase Polyethylene:
    • Production using reaction and catalyst in gas phase.
    • On‑site and off‑site training required (including travel to New Orleans and Red Deer).
    • Teams of 4 operators; opportunity for 4th Class certification via ABSA.
  4. Power & Utilities:
    • Operation of natural gas/hydrogen cogeneration units and heat recovery steam generators.
    • Teams of 5 operators; work toward 3rd and 2nd Class certification.
Qualifications
Required
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Progress toward ABSA 4th Class certification (or higher).
  • Valid Canadian drivers license.
  • Ability to work rotating 12‑hour shifts.
  • Legal authorization to work in Canada (no visa sponsorship available).
Preferred
  • Two‑year technical diploma (e.g., Chemical Engineering or Power Engineering Technology).
  • 1+ years of related work experience in operations, instrumentation, or mechanical/electrical roles.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
