About The Role

As a member of the Lambton County Library system, the Branch Assistant is responsible for providing front line customer service to visitors of Lambton County Library. In addition to promoting a welcoming and inviting library environment, the Branch Assistant will provide a wide variety of circulation duties, conduct necessary administrative duties, provide information services, reference and referral service as well as readers' advisory services. The Branch Assistant is responsible for delivering a library service that meets the strategic direction set forth by senior management and Lambton County Council.


Circulation Duties


  • Assist patrons to obtain all types of materials such as books, videos, audiobooks, and to access computers following established policies and procedures

  • Issue new and replacement library cards to patrons

  • Provide new patrons with orientation and tours of library and answer all questions/concerns

  • Place library materials on hold for patrons; contact patrons when items are available when necessary

  • Collect fees

  • Send library materials to other branches as needed

  • Check material in and out; shelve returned materials


Readers' Advisory/Reference Work


  • Advise patrons in the selection and location of requested material/information

  • Assist with wide range of research queries

  • Respond to general inquiries and address patron questions regarding use of computer, Internet and other programmes


Programming Duties


  • Deliver programming as directed by Lambton County Library, which may include organizing the dates, times, registration, and other required planning

  • Promote reading and lifelong learning in the community through established programs such as story hour, summer reading challenge, book clubs


Administrative Duties


  • Perform photocopying, mail sorting and distribution

  • Balance petty cash and submit revenue from fees

  • Record and distribute circulation, programming statistics

  • Order supplies from Library Headquarters as needed
  • Maintain necessary corporate files in accordance with the County of Lambton's Records Retention By-law


Customer Service / Communication Responsibilities


  • Represent the library effectively in the community

  • Interact pleasantly and courteously with the public, community partners and staff, promoting a harmonious workplace
  • Provide instructions or assistance to the public in the use of new technologies and / or electronic platforms


Other Job Tasks / Responsibilities


  • Ensure the effective use of the Integrated Library System (ILS)

  • Develop an understanding of electronic platforms and resources that can be used by patrons to enhance their library experience


General


  • Incumbents must keep up-to-date on all relevant legislation, collective bargaining agreements, County Policies and Procedures, etc. ensuring that these are implemented as prescribed

  • Incumbents must possess the physical ability to meet the duties and responsibilities of the job description and/or the requirements identified within the position's Physical Demands Analysis

What We Are Looking For

Minimum Formal Education


  • Two-Year College Diploma, or the equivalent in combination of education and experience


Experience


  • Minimum six months in a service-related job or previous volunteer work in a Library

  • Computer experience including Microsoft Office products, Outlook, Internet, electronic database, digital platforms, etc.

  • Interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills

  • Previous library experience and experience using an Integrated Library System (ILS) an asset


Credentials


  • A satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check and / or Police Information Check, as applicable
