Position Overview

The Athletic Therapist assesses and treats patients in accordance with established orthopedic surgical protocols in order to restore and maintain optimal musculoskeletal function, prevent disability, and promote wellbeing. They work as a member of an interdisciplinary team to assist patients in their recovery from Orthopedic surgery, including collaboration with Surgeons, Physicians, Nursing, Physiotherapists and other HealthCare professionals and support staff.

Experience
  • Recent and related direct patient/resident/client care experience in a healthcare setting is preferred.
Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)
  • Certified with the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association (CATA), which requires completion of a recognized four-year BSc program in Kinesiology and Applied Health, with a major in Athletic Therapy.
Certification/Licensure/Registration
  • Member in good standing with both the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association (CATA), and Manitoba Athletic Therapists Association (MATA).
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certificate.

Physical Requirements
  • Must be in good physical health and be able to sit, stand or walk for extended periods of time without resting.
  • Must demonstrate the use of safe and effective body mechanics while working with patients/residents/clients.
  • Must be able to safely transfer patients/residents/clients who may have limited or no weight-bearing abilities, with or without the use of equipment, as appropriate
  • Must demonstrate adequate motor coordination or dexterity, agility, strength and endurance to perform the complete spectrum of job functions.
  • Must be able to work in environments with potential exposure to dust, grease, oil, infectious diseases, blood and body fluids, toxic materials, allergens, physical/emotional stress, and noise.
  • May encounter aggressive and/or agitated patients/residents/clients and visitors. Training and ongoing support are provided to manage such situations.
  • May be required to occasionally work overtime hours.
  • May be required to work a variety of shifts including days, evenings and weekends.
  • May be required to handle acute patient/client/resident care during emergent situations. Training and education concerning this will be provided upon orientation as determined by site’s policy and procedure.

This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred. A security check is considered current if it was obtained no more than six (6) months prior to the start of employment.
