About the Team

The FIU team is responsible for the detection and deep dive investigation of ongoing fraud attacks for Capital One Canada’s Card business. The team also has a mandate to assist with Law Enforcement inquiries, manage escalated complaints in the fraud space, and perform activities within the Fraud Ring and AML referral program.

About the Role

The Fraud Investigation lead is expected to analyze data to identify trends, patterns, and increases in fraudulent activity. The role is responsible for responding to organized fraud attacks and emerging trends by performing extensive investigation and providing recommendations on how to address the fraudulent activity without adversely impacting customers. The investigator partners closely with Operations, Strategy, and Product teams to identify gaps in processes and/or defenses to balance customer experience while minimizing fraud losses. The investigator will bring forward possible solutions grounded in data and qualitative evidence.

Your Responsibilities
  • Can quickly and accurately determine fraudulent activity and assess the scalability of fraud occurring.
  • Perform deep investigation work to determine fraud MO, points of weakness within a defense or process, and articulate what mitigation strategies can be engaged.
  • Author SQL/Python scripts and dashboards to identify fraud attacks, size fraud trends, and be responsible for tracking the impact and effectiveness of mitigation strategies related to an attack or trend.
  • Perform link analysis using provided tools to uncover fraud rings and all possible impacted accounts.
  • Document identified fraud attacks.
  • Communicate ongoing fraud risks to leadership using a variety of communication tools including presentation, email, and briefs.
  • Develop and maintain processes and documentation to ensure best practices for fraud investigation, prevention strategies, and KPI tracking.
  • Work with law enforcement on active investigations.
  • Act as a consultant to Data Science, Process, Operations, and Business Analyst teams to improve fraud prevention processes and the resulting customer experience.
  • Leverage a team of agents to perform preventative actions on customer accounts and collect information about possible fraudulent activity.
  • Act as a Fraud SME to the wider business, promoting fraud awareness and education involving ongoing fraud risks within the business.
  • Assist members of the fraud investigation team, utilizing fraud expertise to add differentiated approaches.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bi-Lingual (French and English)
  • Degree in Criminology or another relevant field
  • Experience using Tableau, Snowflake, Insight, and Credit Browser
  • Experience working with Law Enforcement on criminal investigations and knowledge of relevant local criminal procedure
  • Certified Financial Crimes Investigator (CFCI) , Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE)
  • 2+ years experience developing and monitoring fraud defenses
