Looking for a new and exciting opportunity? We are looking for an Assistant Designer, Communications to join our team!

What You Will Do

Reporting to the Senior Designer, Communications, you will provide technical support in the preparation, analysis, monitoring and co-ordination of new projects or modifications to existing equipment as related to the design and testing of TTC's Communications systems and equipment for the department. You will assist with the preparation of estimates, material lists, specifications, standards, policies, work methods, test procedures and drawings. You will also conduct engineering analyses, evaluations, tests and draw conclusions. As an Assistant Designer, you will also conduct investigations into electrical, signaling or track problems and detect new areas needing engineering attention to improve safety, productivity and cost effectiveness.

Other responsibilities of your role will include:

  • Provide expertise in relation to design work associated with the TTC’s communications and other systems such as analog and digital CCTV system, Access Control system, and associated networks
  • Prepare drawings, estimates, material lists, specifications, standards, policies, work methods, test procedures, designs and schedules for new installations, rehabilitation and emergency work
  • Layout/preparing designs and drawings for various projects in accordance with TTC design standards and various codes, Engineers' notes, rough sketches, verbal instructions and own design concepts
  • Reviewing and interpreting existing conditions, drawings, specifications, and material submissions; obtaining additional data necessary for the completion of accurate drawings and specifications, and conformity with TTC master specifications and design manuals
  • Initiating and researching design standards; applying knowledge to ensure final designs are practical and meet TTC and industry standards, codes and requirements; conducting studies as directed and researching reference drawings for structural details
  • Providing direction and guidance to operational maintenance personnel, supervisory staff, students or on-site contract employees regarding existing equipment, new installations or inspection work

What Qualifications Do You Bring?
  • Your educational background will consist of the completion of a post-secondary college diploma or university degree in a related discipline (i.e., Electrical Engineering) or a combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent.
  • Your application will reveal experience in the application of electrical engineering principles, methods and practices
  • Experience with Genetec and C-CURE9000 is considered an asset.
  • Certification through PEO or O.A.C.E.T.T. is considered an asset.
  • Video Management System training and proficiency is considered an asset.
  • Computer networking certification, training and proficiency is also considered an asset.
  • You will have working knowledge of CCTV system design principles, CCTV equipment, associated CCTV electronic testing equipment, vital and non-vital system and other associated CCTV equipment.
  • Must have experience with conducting communications-related tests and interpreting the results.
  • Additionally, you will have knowledge of the Ontario Hydro Electric Safety Code, Ontario Building Code, CSA standards and other applicable codes and standards associated with access control systems.
  • You will have sound judgement, proven technical design skills, and well-developed organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills. Additionally, you will have effective verbal communication and technical report writing skills.
  • Your knowledge of CADD (preferably MicroStation CADD) and other computerized applications applicable to the work (e.g. MS Office, MS Word, Excel etc.) will be beneficial in this role.
  • As an Assistant Designer, you will be acquired to complete Subway Rulebook Certification.
