Job Description: The Addictions Counsellor Degree Senior is responsible for supporting the coordination of admissions, clinical supervision of staff, providing clinical services and implementation of programs within the Concurrent Disorders (CD) Program. This position liaises, collaborates and influences other services within MHAS, health care providers, and CBO’s to build capacity and integrate treatment strategies for clients with co-occurring MH and substance use disorder. The incumbent is a competent practitioner who pursues a systematic approach and adheres to the Provincial Clinical Addiction Model for practice, evidence based practices in CD treatment and SHA philosophy, objectives and standards. They must be familiar with substance use, mental health and CDs knowledge bases, risks associated with clients who have CDs, strong leadership and presentation skills, and strong counselling skills. The incumbent will work with the CDs Nurse and staff to triage clients with acute and ongoing CDs.

Experience

  • Bachelor of Chemical Dependency

Other Education and Training

  • Completed social sciences or human services discipline acceptable to employer
  • Intermediate - Capability to engage others: Build teams
  • Intermediate - Verbal communication skills

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Knowledge in substance abuse and addictions, including cause and effect
  • Knowledge in addiction issues and mental health disorders
  • Knowledge of community, government, & research resources to aid clients recovery
  • Knowledge in harm reduction in Addictions Medicine
  • Knowledge of current medications used in treatment of mental health disorders
  • Knowledge in counselling practices for concurrent mental health/substance abuse
  • Trained in current ASIST suicide risk assessment model
  • Knowledge of motivational interviewing
  • Knowledge of evidence based addiction counselling supervision model
  • Knowledge in research and program evaluation protocols
  • Knowledge of concurrent disorders
  • Ability to work independently and as a leader of a multidisciplinary team
  • Knowledge Transtheoretical Model of Change
  • Knowledge in best practice models, current research and relapse prevention

Other Information

  • Experience in clinical supervision and skill development of staff an asset
  • Preference for this position will be given to HSAS members in accordance with the terms and conditions of the SAHO/HSAS Collective Agreement
