Job description
Overview

The Accountant reports into Senior Director, Finance. The Accountant is responsible for the day-to-day management of the department's financial reporting, treasury and taxation matters, including the preparation of financial statements and reports. Accuracy and integrity of the data is paramount and must be performed in a highly confidential manner.

Other primary duties include managing budgets, processing payments for approval, allocating funds as and where required and reporting on the effectiveness of these activities.

Performance of duties will be under the supervision of two former Big 4 Public Practice CPA, CA's (1 audit and 1 tax).

Key Areas of Accountability

Financial Information and Processes:

  • Responsible for maintaining the integrity of all aspects of general ledgers and prepare financial information in a timely manner. This will include A/P; payroll; intercompany; fair value investment adjustment, and other journal entries
  • Ensure compliance and assisting in the formulation of internal controls and processes to comply with established best practices in all financial matters
  • Coding or reviewing expense reports and journal entries
  • Ensure compliance for payroll forms and remittances
  • Understand and facilitate processes; propose and develop procedures to improve efficiency
  • May individually perform, or as a team member, complex analyses and projects
  • Various ad-hoc reports and stakeholder requests

Treasury Management:

  • Monitor and maintain reporting of cash balances among all entities
  • Assist in the preparation of budgets and forecasts and perform ongoing variance analyses
  • Coordinate certain payments through private bankers
  • Ensure accounts payable are paid in a timely manner

Tax Compliance:

  • Preparation of T1, T2, T3, T4 and T5 returns
  • Ensure compliance with payroll and WCB/WSIB remittances and payments
  • Coordinate personal and corporate tax instalments
  • Managing provincial information returns (vacancy and empty homes tax; speculation tax; property tax assessments etc.)

Other Accountabilities:

  • Support the department's Senior Director, Finance and Senior Manager, Tax with various financial and taxation analyses and reporting
  • Assist in project management by following up with team members with clear and timely communication to ensure accountability to deadlines and targets
  • Seek operational and administrative efficiencies without compromising quality and confidentiality
  • As a small office, there is an expectation to take on new and unanticipated tasks as the business requires.
Qualifications
Education/Certifications/Knowledge
  • Completion of a bachelor's degree in accounting, business administration, or a related field
  • Possessing a CPA designation would also be an asset
Experience
  • Minimum 2+ years in a similar function; or 5+ years in a progressive accounting role
  • Experience working for a public accounting firm or family office enterprise is considered an asset.
Skills
  • Solid understanding of Canadian tax compliance for private enterprises and individuals. Experience with Trust returns would be an asset
  • Understanding of data analysis and forecasting
  • Strong communicator - written and verbal
  • Effective problem-solving, organizational, and time management skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 (Excel, Outlook, and Word), QuickBooks, CaseWare and TaxPrep
  • Confidentiality and applying appropriate discretion is a requirement.

Work Environment

Work Environment - Hybrid role with minimum 3 days in office based in Vancouver.

Compensation
  • The base salary offered for this role is $65,000 to $75,000 per annum and can vary based on job-related expertise, qualifications, experience and internal equity.
