Duties:

The Fire Service Advisor is responsible for providing front line support to over 130 municipalities, 3 local authorities and over 240 fire departments. The Fire Service Advisor provides technical advice on fire protection service delivery, fire prevention programming, community risk reduction on fire related aspects such as wild urban interface, and other related community based emergency service capacity building. Critical functions include exercising authority under the Fires Prevention and Emergency Response Act in support of the Manitoba Fire Service and various emergency response partners.

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education in the fields of emergency management, fire protection, fire administration, or a related field. A combination of education and experience in emergency services, preparedness and response, fire department administration, emergency services , fire training and safety, public safety practices, and organization and deployment of emergency services will be considered.
  • Experience in the Fire Service or firefighting or fire paramedic role, or a combination of technical knowledge and skills in fire protection and fire prevention programming.
  • Ability to develop and maintain professional and effective relationships with a wide network of contacts including Fire Chiefs, Training Officers, local government/agency representatives and others.
  • Knowledge of public safety practices and the management, administration, organization and deployment of emergency services.
  • Strong verbal presentation skills with the ability to present material in a classroom training environment, or conduct public presentations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to facilitate meetings and discussions with clients.
  • Strong written communication skills for preparing correspondence and reports for a wide audience.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver results within deadlines.
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving and judgement skills.
  • Experience with business continuity including developing approaches to plan, forecast, estimate and manage risks in a multi-stakeholder environment with the ability to implement critical functions following emergencies, disasters or disruptions.
  • Experience researching leading practices and trends relating to fire protection, community risk reduction and prevention and education, or combination of leading practices.
  • Knowledge of relevant Acts, Regulations, programs and the general mandate of the Office of the Fire Commissioner.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Ability to work weekends, evenings and to travel whenever the program may require
  • Must be able to travel throughout Manitoba, in Canada and Internationally.
  • A valid Manitoba Class 5 driver's licence (ability to achieve a Class 4 driver's license) and satisfactory Driver's Abstract
  • Must provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search
  • May be required to travel on short notice and work extended hours, as required, to meet operational requirements or support operational deployments.
  • Can perform related duties and functions of the position including lifting, driving long distance, setting up and providing presentations to clients.
  • Must provide a satisfactory Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check
