SUMMARY

The 3rd Class Stationary Engineer performs operational work in a central heating and cooling plant or central heating plant in the National Capital Area, reporting to the 1st Class Stationary Engineer. The PWGSC contract provides custodial services to federal government organizations in the region. BGIS supplies certified and trained Operating Engineers to manage, operate, and maintain various registered central heating and cooling plants.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operate boilers, chillers, generators, combustion chambers, firing equipment, water pumps, valves, expansion joints, fans, distribution systems, and auxiliary equipment, including computer systems.
  • Conduct tests on mechanical equipment and water samples to ensure reliability and proper chemical concentrations.
  • Start up and shut down large oil and gas-fired boilers and generators, adjust controls, perform preventive maintenance, and replace parts as needed.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical issues using analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Utilize various computer software programs related to plant operations.
  • Perform chemical testing on water samples to ensure quality standards.
  • Use hand and power tools for maintenance and repairs.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

  • 3-5 years of experience at the Class 3 level.
  • Strong knowledge of heating and cooling plant equipment and systems, including boilers, chillers, generators, and related components.
  • Understanding of environmental standards and occupational health and safety regulations.
  • Ability to prepare work orders, operational reports, and documentation.
  • Manual dexterity for repairing and overhauling equipment.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills for reporting and collaboration.

Licenses and/or Professional Accreditation

  • 3rd class Stationary Engineer certification.
