Job description
100% TERM Anishinaabemowin Language Teacher K-8

The Anishinaabemowin Language Teacher has an essential role in the Winnipeg School Division, ensuring that Anishinaabemowin is not only taught but lived and shared. Through immersive experiences, peer interaction, and meaningful language use, the Language Teacher will collaborate with the Classroom Teacher to create a dynamic, student-centered environment where Anishinaabemowin flourishes. This position is about more than just supporting teaching—it’s about keeping the language alive, growing, and thriving for generations to come.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with Classroom Teachers: Teach conversational Anishinaabemowin alongside the classroom teacher through oral and aural pedagogies. Support teachers in integrating the language throughout the school day.
  • Model and Facilitate Language Use: Speak exclusively in Anishinaabemowin during co‑teaching, ensuring meaningful language acquisition for students and teacher‑learners. Facilitate rich experiences where students hear, speak, share, and reflect on their learning.
  • Whole‑School Integration: Embed Anishinaabemowin indoors and outdoors, using spaces like Omand’s Creek and Naawi‑Oodena as natural language lab sites. Work alongside music, physical education, and nature‑based learning teachers to ensure language is present across all experiences.
  • Community Engagement: Participate in celebration of learning evenings, open houses, and other events to support families in learning Anishinaabemowin. Build relationships that strengthen cultural and linguistic connections while celebrating dialectical differences.
  • Effective Teaching Strategies: Teach orally without English translation, using gestures, images, objects, and modeling. Incorporate storytelling, nature walks, songs, and interactive, peer‑to‑peer teaching. Ensure language from songs extends into conversation.
  • Growth Tracking & Self‑Assessment through Reciprocity: Support students in assessing their progress in the language with reciprocity as the end in mind: Understanding → Imitation → Conversing → Sharing → Teaching Others. Provide audio‑video recordings for self‑assessment and celebrate language growth with the students and their families.
