Position Summary
To take a major role in the advanced assessment and treatment of patients within the Speech language and Swallowing speciality who may have complex or chronic presentation with appropriate clinical diagnosis and provide Speech therapy/Auditory verbal Therapy as indicated and to maintain the records.
Undertake a lead role in planning, coordinating, delivering and evaluating the Speech therapy services provided for both out-patient and in-patient services at UHS.
Summary of Main Duties
- Actively participates in upholding and promoting the vision and culture of University Hospital – Sharjah (UHS)
- Complies with all UHS policies and procedures and fire regulations
- Participates in all aspects of the International Accreditation program to assist UHS attain and maintain international accreditation standards
- Participates in commissioning assigned areas and associated Clinical areas
- Undertakes the comprehensive assessment of speech and language evaluation of children, adults and geriatric population including those with a complex presentation, using investigative and analytical skills, and formulates individualised management and treatment plans, using clinical reasoning, utilising a wide range of treatment skills and options to formulate a specialised programme of care.
- Motivate clients, parents/caregiver(s), and other professionals to engage in the therapeutic process, especially where there is resistance to intervention or lack of cooperation.
- Accepts clinical responsibility for a designated caseload of Speech therapy patients and organise this effectively and efficiently with regard to clinical priorities and use of time.
- Coordinates with the UHS colleagues (ENT, Audiology, Neurology, Paediatrics etc), regarding patient’s progress and discuss future plans.
- Provides spontaneous and planned advice and instruction to colleagues and other professionals, to promote understanding of the aims of Speech therapy services and ensures a consistent approach in patient care at UHS.
- Communicates effectively with patients (includes parents and caregivers) to maximise the re/habilitation potential and to ensure understanding of their condition.
- Communicates effectively and work collaboratively with medical, nursing and Audiology unit colleagues to ensure delivery of a coordinated multi-disciplinary service.
- Responsible for ensuring the effective selection and use of all treatment resources available both in the speech therapy clinic and on the wards.
- Responsible for using appropriate equipment carrying out Speech therapy services and adhere to departmental and hospital policy, including competency to use equipment and to ensure the safe use of equipment by others through training and supervision of practice.
- Maintains accurate, comprehensive and up-to-date documentation and communicates assessment and treatment results using appropriate form of reports.
- Comply with the organisational and departmental policies and procedures and to be involved in the reviewing and updating as appropriate and to follow the general professional guidelines and standards.
- Should retain all necessary registration/license requirements.
- Self development participate in internal orientation, mandatory, ongoing education programs Attend external conferences, workshops, seminars and courses that will enhance and maintain a current knowledge base.
- Works any shift as per the duty roster/ demands as per the Department when designated.

Position Requirements/Qualifications
Graduate of Bachelor of Science in Speech language and hearing/ Master of science in Speech language Pathology with 5 years of experience.
Licenses/Registration
- Has a valid Ministry of Health Evaluation as Speech Therapist.
Position criteria Other Skills/Abilities
- Manage Speech and language, swallowing disorders caseloads from ENT, Pediatrics, Internal medicine, Neurology etc. with appropriate assessment and use Speech, language and Auditory verbal therapy techniques and function within the MOH licensed specialty.
Other Skills/Abilities
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Solid interpersonal communication skills for working with patients, their families and other medical staff.
- Detail-oriented, organized, self-directed and quick-thinking. Sensitive to patients' needs.
- Able to motivate well and also must be physically fit to show patients how to perform various treatment plan exercises as well as lift disabled patients when necessary.
