Senior Archaeologist

Department: Archaeology Department

Section: Surveys and Excavations

Reports To: Director of Archaeology Department, Department of Antiquities and Museums, Ras Al Khaimah

Employment Type: Full-time

Role Purpose

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Senior Archaeologist to join our team. The successful candidate will contribute to the planning and execution of archaeological excavations, investigations, and projects, and participate in research aimed at uncovering and preserving the cultural heritage of Ras Al Khaimah. The role requires utilizing advanced techniques to document, analyze, and report of the excavations of the archaeological sites in alignment with international best practices and standards.

Key Responsibilities

Fieldwork and Excavations:

  • Plan and conduct archaeological surveys and excavations under the direction of the Department of Antiquities and Museums.
  • Carry out emergency rescue excavations throughout the year.
  • Use appropriate tools and techniques to excavate archaeological sites, ensuring the preservation and documentation of archaeological artifacts and findings.
  • Manage and organize data related to field archaeology and prepare a post-excavation archive, as appropriate.
  • Use photogrammetry for detailed documentation, and a single-context documentation system.
  • Work closely with other archaeologists, conservators, and specialists to document and preserve findings and contribute to research.

Documentation, Analysis, and Reporting:

  • Review and analyze excavation data, field notes, and photographic records.
  • Ensure the completeness and accuracy of post-excavation documentation.
  • Organize and update reports and databases related to excavation findings.
  • Create stratigraphic diagrams and analyze layers and features using the Harris Matrix.
  • Analyze artifacts and materials recovered from excavations using suitable methods to determine their origin, use, and significance.
  • Prepare final reports and publications, ensuring that all relevant information is included and clearly presented.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Master’s degree in Archaeology is required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of archaeological experience, with expertise in the UAE or Gulf region.
  • Experience working with the single-context documentation system, based on the guidelines set out by MOLA (Museum of London).
  • Proficiency in excavation, artifact analysis, and digital documentation techniques.
  • In-depth knowledge of Gulf region archaeology and cultural heritage.
  • Preferred skills in using GIS to create detailed site maps and manage archaeological information systems effectively.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and technical writing skills.
  • Fluency in English is required.
