The Health and Safety Advisor is responsible for promoting and ensuring a safe working environment by advising on best practices conducting risk assessments ensuring compliance with occupational health and safety regulations and leading safety initiatives. This role is key in fostering a safety-first culture throughout the organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop implement and maintain workplace health and safety programs and policies.
- Conduct risk assessments safety inspections and audits across worksites and facilities.
- Investigate incidents near misses and hazards; provide detailed reports and follow-up actions.
- Ensure compliance with local state and federal health and safety regulations (e.g. OSHA WHMIS).
- Deliver safety training toolbox talks and orientation sessions for employees and contractors.
- Advise management and staff on occupational health and safety matters.
- Coordinate emergency response plans drills and first aid readiness.
- Liaise with regulatory agencies third-party auditors and internal stakeholders.
- Monitor and report on safety performance metrics and recommend improvements.
- Support development of Safe Work Procedures (SWPs) and Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs).
- Keep up to date with relevant health and safety legislation standards and best practices.
Qualifications
- Degree diploma or certification in Occupational Health and Safety Environmental Health or related discipline.
- 3 years of experience in a health and safety role preferably in industry-specific experience if needed e.g. construction manufacturing oil & gas.
- In-depth knowledge of occupational health and safety legislation and regulatory frameworks.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Excellent communication training and interpersonal abilities.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and safety management software.
Preferred Skills & Certifications
- CRSP NEBOSH CHSC or equivalent health and safety certifications.
- Experience with ISO 45001 COR or other safety management systems.
- First Aid/CPR WHMIS or other relevant safety training certifications.
- Incident investigation (e.g. TapRooT Root Cause Analysis) training.
