Job description

Manufacturing group are seeking a Factory Shift Supervisor for their operation in Mobeni . Applicants will need 10+ years experience in a similar role.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Shift Management

  • Oversee all production activities during the assigned shift to ensure output meets daily production targets.
  • Plan and allocate work to machine operators, packers, and support staff.
  • Conduct shift start meetings to communicate priorities, safety instructions, and quality expectations.

Production Monitoring & Efficiency

  • Monitor machine performance, workflow, and line speed to ensure maximum efficiency.
  • Identify bottlenecks or production interruptions and implement corrective actions.
  • Ensure minimal downtime by coordinating timely changeovers, material availability, and technical support.

Quality Control & Compliance

  • Ensure products meet customer specifications and internal quality standards.
  • Perform in-process quality checks and verify that operators follow QC procedures.
  • Address product defects or deviations immediately and escalate when necessary.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant South African packaging standards (e.g., SANS) and food safety systems (e.g., HACCP / FSSC 22000), where applicable.

Health, Safety & Environmental Control

  • Enforce adherence to Occupational Health & Safety Act (OHSA) requirements.
  • Ensure safe use of machinery, PPE compliance, lockout / tagout, and housekeeping standards.
  • Report any safety hazards, near-misses, and incidents; complete incident documentation and support investigations.

Staff Leadership & Training

  • Lead, motivate, and supervise shift staff to maintain high levels of productivity and morale.
  • Train new employees on machinery, production procedures, and safety rules.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and address disciplinary issues when necessary.

Material & Resource Coordination

  • Ensure the correct raw materials, packaging, and consumables are available for production.
  • Monitor usage and minimize waste.
  • Communicate shortages, procurement needs, or inefficiencies to planning and procurement teams.

Reporting & Documentation

  • Complete shift production reports, downtime logs, scrap and yield records, and any required compliance documentation.
  • Communicate shift handover information clearly to the incoming supervisor.
  • Attend production meetings and provide accurate shift performance updates.

Continuous Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to improve productivity, quality, and safety.
  • Participate in root cause analysis and improvement projects.
  • Support implementation of Lean Manufacturing, 5S, or Kaizen initiatives where in practice.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Grade 12
  • Have a tertiary qualification
  • Must have a minimum of 10 years of experience as a factory shift supervisor in the packaging industry
  • Must be able to work shifts according to company shift patterns
  • Must have leadership and supervisory skills
  • Must be able to oversee an entire shift of workers, ensuring that they are at their designated work stations
  • Must be able to multitask and plan their shift
RUMUNERATION

R40 000 (basic) + 1 month incentive bonus + 13th cheque + provident
