About the Role
The Vice President & Regional General Counsel for Asia Pacific serves as Align’s senior legal leader across all of APAC including Australia/New Zealand, Southeast Asia, India, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macau, and China. This role is responsible for regional legal activities and is a key contributor to Align’s global and regional legal and business strategy.
In addition to leading over a dozen lawyers and legal professionals on our APAC legal team and having a dotted line responsibility for the APAC compliance team, the successful candidate must be a visible and contributing member of the Global Legal Leadership Team and of the APAC Leadership Team (APLT). Reporting directly to the EVP, Chief Legal & Regulatory Officer with a dotted line to the EVP & Managing Director, APAC, this position is ideal for a seasoned regional executive who blends legal expertise with strong business judgment, leadership maturity, and curiosity in a fast-moving, matrixed environment.
Role expectations
Leadership & Strategic Partnership
- Contribute as a key member of the Global Legal, RA/QA/GA Leadership Team, shaping global standards, priorities, governance and implementing an AI first organization.
- Serve as a visible leader for the APAC organization and a trusted legal and strategic partner to the APAC Leadership Team, helping shape business strategy, guide key decisions, and unlock opportunities for growth and efficiency.
- Partner with Global Compliance, IP, Litigation, Privacy, AI, Competition and Public Policy to drive strategy and navigate the region’s evolving landscape.
- Model Align’s ACA values of Agility, Customer Focus, Accountability, while driving clarity, alignment, and collaboration across a global matrix.
- Participate in APAC AOP planning, business reviews, and major operational and investment decisions.
Legal & Compliance Leadership
- Provide strategic legal counsel across advertising and promotion of prescription medical devices, HCP interactions, competition/antitrust, commercial contracting, privacy, AI, cybersecurity, IP, labor, manufacturing and treatment planning operations, product regulatory matters, and dispute management.
- Oversee regional compliance in partnership with local compliance teams, including anticorruption, investigations, monitoring, and adherence to global and local regulations.
- Partner with regulatory and compliance specialists to deliver targeted training and capability-building across the region.
- Apply sound business and legal judgment to complex issues, proposed deals, and partnerships requiring legal or compliance attention.
- Support Align’s brand protection and enforcement efforts at regional and local levels.
Operational Excellence
- Drive consistency, efficiency, and standardization across legal operations in APAC, including contract management, compliance processes, outside counsel management, and budget oversight.
- Identify opportunities to simplify and scale workflows, including thoughtful use of AI-enabled tools that improve speed, insight, and decision quality.
Leadership of People & Culture
- Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing regional legal team.
- Promote leadership behaviors core to Align: curiosity, courageous decision-making, emotional intelligence, accountability, and adaptability.
- Build an inclusive, collaborative culture where teams feel empowered and connected to Align’s mission.
What We're Looking For
- Law degree from a leading APAC university; LL.M or J.D. from a recognized U.S. law school preferred.
- Licensed to practice law in an APAC jurisdiction.
- 15+ years across international law firms and multinational in‑house roles.
- Experience in medical devices, pharmaceuticals, biotech, or another highly regulated environment.
- Strong understanding of APAC legal and regulatory frameworks, including advertising/promotion, commercial law, competition/antitrust, privacy, AI, healthcare interactions, and compliance.
- Proven ability to advise senior leaders, balance risk with business needs, and make sound, timely decisions in complex environments.
- Experience leading investigations, litigation strategy, and brand protection.
- Ability to operate with agility across diverse jurisdictions and cultures; resilient and comfortable with ambiguity.
- Exceptional communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills.
- Fluency in English required; additional APAC languages a plus.
- Curiosity toward how technology and AI can improve legal and compliance operations.
- 20–30% travel.
