General Summary

The Travel Underwriter is responsible for evaluating, pricing, and managing travel insurance risks across leisure, business, and specialty travel segments. This role ensures the profitability, growth, and sustainability of the travel insurance portfolio by applying sound underwriting discipline, market insights, and strong analytical capabilities. The underwriter will collaborate closely with distribution teams, product development, claims, actuarial, and regional leadership to deliver competitive yet profitable solutions.

Duties and Responsibilities
1. Underwriting & Risk Assessment
  • Assess and underwrite travel insurance risks across individual, group, and affinity channels.
  • Review applications, travel patterns, claims experience, and exposure profiles to determine appropriate terms and pricing.
  • Approve or decline risks within delegated authority; elevate cases as needed.
  • Ensure adherence to underwriting guidelines, regulatory requirements, and internal policies.
2. Portfolio Management
  • Monitor performance of travel insurance portfolios, including loss ratios, trends, and emerging risks.
  • Work with actuarial teams to review pricing adequacy and support rate reviews where needed.
  • Identify unprofitable segments and propose corrective action plans.
  • Support quarterly portfolio reviews and planning cycles.
3. Product Development & Enhancement
  • Contribute to the development of new travel insurance products, benefits, and pricing structures.
  • Conduct competitor benchmarking and market intelligence to maintain competitive positioning.
  • Collaborate with digital/e-commerce teams on new product journeys, customer journeys, and platform rollouts.
4. Distribution & Stakeholder Engagement
  • Support sales and distribution channels by providing underwriting expertise, training, and guidance.
  • Participate in client, broker, and partner discussions to structure solutions and close opportunities.
  • Work closely with regional teams to execute underwriting strategies and growth plans.
5. Operational Excellence
  • Maintain high standards of documentation, governance, and audit compliance.
  • Support process improvements, automation efforts, and system enhancements.
  • Ensure timely turnaround of quotations, endorsements, and underwriting referrals.
Qualifications
  • 2–5 years of underwriting experience, ideally in Travel Insurance or Accident & Health (A&H).
  • Strong knowledge of travel insurance products, risk factors, and industry trends.
  • Familiarity with underwriting systems, rating tools, and digital distribution platforms.
  • Analytical mindset with strong skills in Excel; experience with Power BI/QlikSense is an advantage.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Detail‑oriented, proactive, and able to work in a fast‑paced environment.
