Job description

UWCSEA Dover has a vacancy for a Teacher of Middle School English (ages 11- 14) to start in August 2026.

The successful candidate must have a tertiary qualification in relevant subjects and significant teaching experience teaching English to 11 -14 year olds. English classes are at Language A (mother tongue) level in language and literature. UWCSEA uses a bespoke Concept Based curriculum organized around the development of transferable ideas and focuses on the use of active questions to provide the structure and sequence needed to guide students towards conceptual understandings.

Main Responsibilities
  • Teachers should be willing to contribute positively to the collaborative culture of the English department and broader Middle School team.
  • Teachers should construct learning experiences that challenge and inspire students, support the diversity of learners in each classroom and demonstrate a strong commitment to concept-based teaching and learning.
  • Teachers should utilise the UWCSEA Learning Principles as a foundation for effective teaching and learning.
  • Teachers should ensure assessments support ongoing learning and provide timely, relevant, and appropriate feedback to students on formative and summative assessments.
  • Teachers should demonstrate effective classroom management that shows an understanding of the academic, social, and emotional dimensions of learning.
  • Teachers should keep parents informed about the learning of their children, and be proactive in communication with parents.

  • Teach in line with the UWCSEA Teacher Standards
Person Specifications
  • A good degree and a recognized teaching qualification or certification are expected.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, experience and pedagogical knowledge in areas outlined by the UWCSEA Learning Principles and the UWCSEA Profile.
  • Experience of developing concept-based teaching approaches, contemporary assessment practices and the application of blended learning to enhance learning.
  • A culturally competent practitioner who is committed to developing student access to diverse and representational literature and media.
  • A good understanding of best practice in English and Literacy education. It is desirable that applicants have experience with the Readers and Writers Workshop pedagogical model.
  • A commitment to reading and recommending middle school literature.
  • Ability to inspire, lead and model pedagogical practices in English for improved student learning.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively, communicate clearly, self-manage and to think and act in critical, creative and innovative ways to support teaching and learning across the Middle School.
  • Teachers should be willing and eager to participate in the five key elements of a UWCSEA education: Academics; Activities; Outdoor Education; Personal and Social Education and Service
  • Academic expectations include enthusiastic participation in Professional Learning.
  • Pastoral expectations include the leadership of an advisory group which includes accompanying students on an overseas Outdoor Education trip.
  • On average the College expects a yearly contribution of two sessions per week in each season to Activities and/or Service.
  • The College expects that teachers will participate enthusiastically in the curricular Outdoor Education experiences which are relevant to their students and will also occasionally volunteer for holiday Outdoor Education trips.
