Job summary

Job Scope

General Responsibilities

• Manage navigational duties and bridge operations.
• Oversee deck department tasks including cargo operations, medical locker, and first aid.
• Assist in training and supervision of junior staff.
• Familiarize with Chief Officer’s responsibilities for readiness.

Navigational Equipment & Publications

• Responsible for the upkeep and readiness of:
  • Magnetic compasses, radar plotting equipment, chronometer, clocks, barometers
  • Azimuth rings (magnetic and gyro), navigational and emergency lights
  • Charts and nautical publications library
  • Safety equipment as assigned by Master
• Additional duties:
  • Collect and update navigational warnings from MPA.
  • Report safety-related information to Master promptly.
  • Ensure all equipment is checked and ready before departure (with Third Officer).
  • Report any defects to Master immediately.

Navigational Records

• Maintain all navigational and company records requiring his signature.
• Responsible for passage planning as assigned by the Master.

Communciation, Records & Equipment

• Manage GMDSS equipment and related publications.
• Conduct joint equipment checks with relieving officer; logs results in GMDSS Logbook.
• Ensure Master signs off on verification checks.
• Maintain custody of marine publications/documents.
• Ensure Muster Lists are up to date with full crew names per statutory requirements.

Handover Procedures

• Prepare Handing Over/Taking Over Report.
• Incoming Second Officer must inspect:
  • Cargo and ballast arrangements
  • Maintenance status
  • Navigational and safety appliances
• Report submitted using Company forms.

Requirements

• Holder of valid Second Mate (Foreign Going) Certificate of Competency (CoC 3 Deck, unlimited)
• Minimum 6 months experience in the rank of Third Officer
