Job Scope
General Responsibilities
  • Oversee operation, maintenance, and repair of boilers, main and auxiliary machinery.
  • Maintain engine room watch as directed.
  • Report equipment defects to Chief Engineer immediately.
Engine Room Administration
  • Manage and supervise engine department personnel.
  • Allocate routine maintenance and operational duties.
  • Maintain daily records of maintenance and tasks.
  • Oversee daily movements of fuel, lubricating oil, hydraulic oil, and fresh water.
Spare Parts & Repairs
  • Advise Chief Engineer on spare parts requirements.
  • Ensure proper storage, labeling, and preservation of spares.
  • Assist in preparing detailed repair lists.
Safety Responsibilities
  • Familiarize self and crew with Company policies and Safety Management System (SMS).
  • Promote health and safety in the engine room.
  • Cooperate with Ship’s Safety Officer to enhance safety culture.
  • Test emergency stand-by machinery and logs results.
  • Ensure crew training in emergency equipment operation.
  • Assist with bunkering and fuel transfer operations.
  • Maintain cleanliness and order in engine room spaces.
Handover Procedures
  • Prepares Handing Over/Taking Over Report.
  • Incoming Second Engineer must inspect:
    • Engine room
    • Cargo and ballast arrangements
    • Maintenance status
    • Mooring equipment
  • Report submitted using Company forms.
Requirements
