Job description
Responsibilities
  • Consult and coordinate with the surgical team and nursing in preparation for the day to day operations.
  • Assists the surgical team and nursing in pre-operation preparation and post-operation patient care.
  • Perform daily operating room duties such as damp dusting and maintaining the cleanliness of the operating and equipment rooms, housekeeping, porter and dispatch duties.
  • Dilute disinfectant for the mop pail daily according to schedule.
  • Transport patient from inpatient ward to operating theatre and vice versa when necessary.
  • Dispatch specimens to laboratory when necessary.
  • Prepare the operating room and ensure the equipment & machines are complete for the required surgery. Ensure that the equipment and machines are in good working condition prior to surgery.
  • Ensure irrigation and camera system is ready for laparoscopy, hysteroscopy and endoscopy (Oesophago‑Gastro‑Duodenoscopy and Colonoscopy) cases.
  • Ensure colposcope, laser machine and smoke evacuator is ready for all laser cases.
  • Assist in positioning the patient under the supervision of the nurse and surgeon in the required position for the operation.
  • Assist in the application of the patient’s return electrode for the electro surgical unit.
  • Remain in the assigned operating room when surgery is in progress and assist the surgical team in adjusting the surgical lights when required. Inform the circulating nurse when leaving the OR.
  • Handle all equipment with care, check and ensure that all used equipment are clean, in good working condition and stored in their respective storage area.
  • Report any malfunction and issues related to the equipment to Nurse Manager or Staff Nurse In‑charge (depends on availability of mentioned personnel).
  • Conduct inventory checks on equipment and machines.
  • Assist the nurses in safe transferring and positioning of the patients before and after surgical procedures up to the transfer of the patients to the Recovery Room.
  • Follow the hospital protocol in infection control, disposal of soiled linen and waste materials (pathological and non‑pathological) in the operating theatre.
  • Perform cleaning of the theatre after each surgery and terminal cleaning of the operating theatres after the last case of the theatre.
  • Be aware of fire safety and evacuation procedures.
  • Comply with the OT regulations, policies & procedures.
  • Maintain a safe and clean environment for patients.
  • Ensure patient’s confidentiality and privacy at all times.
  • Assist in the maintenance and replenishment of the Operating Theatre supplies.
  • Acquire skills and knowledge via on‑the‑job training in the handling, assembling and maintenance of basic relevant technical and surgical equipment in the OT. Demonstrates the desired competencies after training.
