Job description

The position performs maintenance work associated with a variety of trades, specializing in carpentry, plumbing, and electrical fields.

Major Duties
  • Construction and reconstruction of structures.
  • Assist in the repairs/maintenance of historic log structures.
  • Construct, install, and repair doors, shelves, trim, and cabinets.
  • Replace defective siding, steps, roofs, and concrete.
  • Install and maintain plumbing.
  • Use various hand tools, plumbing tools, painting and power tools.
  • Complete minor repairs to concrete and asphalt walkways, roads, and parking lots.
  • Operate and maintain heavy and light equipment that supports maintenance operations.
  • Operate chainsaws and assist in the removal of hazard trees or monitor the performance of vendors engaged in this task.
  • Repair/maintain contributing grounds assets such as wood and iron fencing, irrigation systems, benches, drinking fountains, etc.
Minor Duties
  • Perform custodial operations in public restrooms.
  • Assist in minor repairs in the plumbing, carpentry, masonry, and electrical trades.
  • Perform interior/exterior painting or staining tasks.
  • Assist in compiling information for annual/scheduled reports and, after training, complete and present the reports independently.
Infrequent Tasks
  • Assist with the feeding and watering of park‑owned livestock.
  • Move boxes and/or furniture.
  • Direct youth and volunteer staff in the performance of light maintenance.
  • Operate government vehicle (GOV) to deliver or pick up materials.
  • Track expenses and labor using computers.
  • Power‑wash hardened surfaces such as concrete and stone.
Area Information

Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial preserves the pioneer farm homestead and surrounding forest where Abraham Lincoln lived from 1816 to 1830. The 200‑acre wooded historical park is located in southern Indiana in Lincoln City, 42 miles east of Evansville and approximately 90 miles west of Louisville. The area is rural but within a 30‑mile radius of shopping facilities, churches, hospitals, universities, and schools. The climate is moderate with averages of 42.5 inches of precipitation per year and temperatures ranging from lows in the winter in the teens to highs in the summer in the 90’s.

Requirements and Conditions of Employment
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • Participate in Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • Operate a government or private motor vehicle as part of official duties; a valid driver’s license is required.
  • Wear a uniform and comply with National Park Service uniform standards; a uniform allowance will be provided.
  • Work on‑call, evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime may be required.
  • New permanent federal employees must complete a one‑year probationary period.
  • Travel overnight away from home may be required; a government charge card must be obtained for travel purposes.
  • Complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old, or at least 16 years old and (a) have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating, (b) have completed a formal vocational training program, (c) have received a statement from school authorities agreeing to employment preference over continuing education, or (d) be currently enrolled in a secondary school and work only during school vacation periods or part‑time under a formal student employment program.
Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the job‑related factors. Experience and training must be described in detail in the resume. The qualifications reviewer will not assume performance of duties by job titles alone. Applicants must demonstrate that they have personally performed this type of work; supervising or managing the work is not sufficient. Applicants must meet the 2‑point level on the screen‑out factor/element and an average of level 2 on all factors/elements listed.

Volunteer Experience

Volunteer work—including National Service programs such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps—provides credit for all qualifying experience.

Education

No substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

Physical Demands

Physical effort is heavy to moderate, requiring occasional lifting of objects or materials up to 50 pounds unassisted following proper lifting procedures. Frequently required to stand, climb ladders or scaffolding, bend, stoop, and work in awkward positions.

Working Conditions

Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather while working outdoors (temperatures –40 to 90+ degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. Exposed to dust, dirt, wind, rain, dangerous chemicals, moving equipment, paints, solvents, electrical shocks, and biting insects.
