Purpose of the Post

Imperial Global Singapore (IGS) is Imperial College London’s formal legal entity in Singapore, established to undertake research and innovation projects in collaboration with universities, industry, government and third‑sector partners across Singapore’s vibrant ecosystem.

Hosted at the Singapore National Research Foundation’s Campus for Research Excellence and Technological Enterprise (CREATE) and located at the National University of Singapore (NUS) U‑Town campus, IGS provides the physical and administrative infrastructure that enables Imperial to extend its research activities into Singapore and the broader Southeast Asia region.

IGS is recruiting a Laboratory Operations Manager to lead and support laboratory operations with a strong focus on health, safety and regulatory compliance, while also providing hands‑on technical support to research activities. The post holder will be employed by Imperial Global Singapore and seconded 50% of their time to Cambridge CARES (Cambridge Centre for Advanced Research and Education in Singapore) as a Deputy Laboratory Manager, working under the Senior Lab Manager. The Associate Director, Imperial Global Singapore, will retain overall line management responsibility.

The position is based full time in Singapore, with time shared between Imperial Global Singapore and Cambridge CARES as agreed, and will involve close collaboration with researchers, technical staff and professional services colleagues across both organisations.

Key Responsibilities

At Imperial Global Singapore, the post holder will:

  • Establish, implement and maintain a comprehensive health, safety and environmental (HSE) framework for IGS’s research and innovation activities in Singapore, in line with the "WSH Act" and relevant "MOM", "NEA", "MOH" and "SCDF" regulations.
  • Act as the primary day to day H&S and lab operations focal point for IGS, including for staff working in shared or rented laboratory spaces managed by partner institutions.
  • Support the development of risk assessments and SOPs, emergency procedures and training materials for laboratory work undertaken by IGS staff.
  • Serve as the operational liaison with host laboratory managers and facility operators, ensuring alignment between IGS procedures and host institution policies and systems.
  • Oversee logistics and deliveries for IGS laboratory activities (chemicals, gases, consumables, equipment), ensuring appropriate documentation, labelling, storage and waste management.
  • Provide hands on laboratory support, including basic experimental assistance, sample preparation, equipment checks and routine maintenance, in support of IGS research projects.
  • Promote a strong safety first culture, and support the IGS DSO in monitoring compliance by supporting audits and inspections and carrying out incident investigations.

At Cambridge CARES, the post holder will:

  • Act as Deputy Laboratory Manager, supporting the Senior Lab Manager in day to day operation of laboratories, including chemical and gas management, waste handling, equipment maintenance, asset inventory and general lab operations.
  • Receive and handle deliveries of chemicals and gas cylinders (including installation of 47"L" cylinders), ensuring safe handling, storage and documentation.
  • Coordinate chemical waste disposal via approved contractors, including tracking and submission of toxic waste reports to local authorities as required.
  • Help maintain high operational readiness by troubleshooting minor equipment failures, arranging servicing and repairs, and maintaining adequate supplies and consumables.
  • Support health, safety and environmental activities, including acting as fire warden and first aider (with training provided if required), and contributing to energy saving and sustainability initiatives.
  • Stand in for the Senior Lab Manager when necessary to ensure continuity of safe and efficient lab operations, and provide administrative support related to laboratory management.
  • Assist research groups through procurement, equipment scheduling, risk identification and assessment, and general laboratory support to enable efficient and safe research.

Job descriptions cannot be exhaustive and the post holder may be required to undertake other duties, which are broadly in line with the above key responsibilities.
