Job description
Head of New Building (Container Vessels)

We are looking for an experienced Head of New Building (NB) for one of our global shipping clients. The Head of NB will oversee all new building projects of the company and plays a critical part in ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest industry standards.

The ideal candidate would have proven track record in leading a small NB team to manage the entire portfolio of new building activities, from contract negotiation through delivery. He/ She would have proficiency in shipbuilding standards and sequences, including database management for ship inspections during construction, block division, building sequence, and pre-outfitting procedures.

Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership & Project Oversight:
  • Overall responsible to lead, manage, and coordinate the entire portfolio of new building activities, from contract negotiation through delivery.
  • Provide strategic oversight to on-site teams, ensure compliance with international regulations, classification society requirements, and company standards, and maintain strong relationships with shipyards, classification societies, and key stakeholders
  • Develop and implement overall strategy, timelines, and resource allocation plans for multiple new building projects (container vessels) simultaneously.
  • Establish and maintain project budgets, schedules, and performance metrics, ensuring timely and cost-effective delivery of all newbuilding vessels.
Stakeholder Engagement & Team Management
  • Serve as the key point of contact with shipyards, classification societies, equipment manufacturers, and design consultants.
  • Negotiate contracts, resolve escalated disputes, and manage relationships to ensure alignment with project objectives and company interests.
  • Lead and mentor New Building Superintendents, Site Managers, and other project personnel, providing guidance, support, and performance management.
  • Facilitate effective communication and collaboration among internal stakeholders, including technical, commercial, and operations teams.
Quality, Compliance & Technical Standards:
  • Oversee adherence to company, class, and international maritime standards (IMO conventions, classification society rules) throughout the new building process.
  • Review and approve design specifications, inspection plans, and testing protocols to ensure vessel integrity, quality, and reliability.
Monitoring & Reporting:
  • Provide regular status updates, financial reports, and performance assessments to senior management and other key stakeholders.
  • Ensure project documentation, certifications, and final acceptance procedures are completed accurately and maintained for future reference.
Qualifications
  • Bachelors Degree or higher in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, or related field.
  • Minimum of 8-10 years of progressively responsible experience in shipbuilding or maritime project management, with at least 3 years in a managerial or senior supervisory role.
  • Proven track record managing multiple large-scale vessel construction projects (ideally container vessels) from contract signing to delivery.
  • Thorough understanding of shipbuilding processes, construction sequences, classification society rules, and IMO regulations.
  • Strong leadership, decision-making, and conflict resolution abilities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage with diverse stakeholders.
