Overview

Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is the team behind the cloud.Within CO&I, the Datacenter Engineering (DCE) teamis responsible fordelivering core datacenter infrastructure for Microsoft’s cloud business. The MS portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year datacenter construction and lease projects. Responsibilities

The APAC Datacenter Engineering Senior Mechanical Engineer will be part of the team responsible for the development of Microsoft’s industry-leading datacenter designs.

This position is a Subject Matter Expertproviding key input to other organizations and stakeholders. The successful candidate will be aprofessional mechanical engineer with hands on design experience in datacenter mechanical engineering (HVAC, Plumbing, Fire Protection, Fuel Oil and BAS systems), along with understanding of relatedconstructionand operations. This individual will also review and coordinate the delivery of complex datacenter mechanical systems, associated controls, and overall topology.

The SME willbe responsible for:

  • Design development decisions related to datacenter projects including new construction, expansions,retrofits and upgradesand standards upgrades in the APAC region.
  • Detailed understanding of mission-critical datacenter HVAC cooling systems, cooling equipmentselection, plumbing systems, fire protection systems, fuelsystemsand mechanical Building Automation System (BAS) controls.
  • Responsible for overseeing the specification and drawing development detailing all mechanical systems
  • Critical assessments of designs and decisions and support in applying the required standards and country-specific regulations to make the best design choices.
  • Engage and manage external design consultants, run design workshops to ensure they deliver a design to meet the requirements of the Basis of Design (BOD).
  • Collaboration with Cross-Functional teams to develop datacenter designs from Basis of Design (BOD) to IssueForConstruction (IFC) and through the Construction Administration phase of the datacenter until handover for new project build outs.
  • Interface closely with the procurement team, the manufacturers, and the global and local engineering teams to deliver the mechanical solutions needed for each project.
  • Assisting Operations teams with mechanical system solutioning and working with Operations and equipment vendors for implementation as well as assisting in commissioning activities to validate performance, quality, and reliability.
  • Some travel to sites for “Factory Witness Testing”,consultant/vendor interaction in the design process, as well asforfinal commissioning of the installed systems.
  • Collaboration with internal and externalcustomers,leadthe direction of the mechanical designs andoverseethe delivery of multiple, concurrent, complete datacenter design solutions aligned with scopes,scheduleand budgets of the projects.
  • Supporting requests, liaise with customers to develop specific project design requirements,liaiseand collaborate with other Microsoft engineering teams and Operations providing support as and whenrequiredfor new and existing datacenters
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related technical engineering experience
  • ORMaster's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related technical engineering experience
  • OR equivalent experience.
  • Related technical experience in consulting engineering / construction / operation which involves design, engineering, construction, operation or maintenance of large scale and complex mission-critical mechanical (HVAC, Plumbing, Fire Protection, Fuel Oil, BAS) systems
  • Technical understanding of mission critical environments.
  • Strong experience with the operation and maintenance of building cooling and related mechanical systems (HVAC, Chilled Water, DX Refrigerant, Evaporative, and related controls systems)
  • Knowledge of construction techniques and terminology including the ability to read and interpret blueprints, constructiondrawingsand documents is essential.
  • Familiarity with External & Internal CFD modelling and detailed review of CFD technical reports
  • Sound knowledge of building codes and regulations.
  • Ability to perform complex business case analysis to justify technical decisions
  • Mustpossessstrong leadership competencies and willingness to collaborate and work cross- functionally to maximize business results and positive customer experiences
  • Experience managing both internal and external vendors, with a proven ability to manage andmonitorprogress to ensureobjectivesare achieved for outsourced project efforts
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills at varying levels of business up to and including business executives
  • Ability to manage, prioritize and successfully execute multiple concurrent mission-critical infrastructure projects
  • Excellent analytical andorganisationalskills.

  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally.

  • Professional Engineer or Chartered Engineer certification
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years related technical engineering experience
  • ORMaster's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related technical engineering experience
  • OR equivalent experience.
  • Proven experience in consulting engineering and/or hyperscale/colocation datacenter environments, withstrong design, construction/commissioningand project execution skills.
  • Ability to lead teams of engineers in advanced engineering and operational processes and procedures as they relate to large datacenter environments
