Software Development Engineer - Apache Flink Engineer, Amazon Managed Service for Apache Flink

Come change the way world processes streaming data. The Amazon Managed Service for Apache Flink (MSF) team is looking for a Software Development Engineer to work on the Apache Flink framework. We’re looking for engineers who can learn and build distributed stream processing engines. If you are a builder who is enthusiastic about data streaming and excited about contributing to open source, this may be the role for you.

Real-time data processing from a stream requires substantial investments from customers in writing the application and maintaining the necessary infrastructure. MSF provides a fully managed stream processing platform leveraging the Apache Flink framework, where customers can develop their applications using SQL or Java. With the service, customers only need to provide the application code containing the business logic to process the stream; the service provides building blocks and abstractions such as processing windows, execution semantics, checkpoints, and infrastructure capabilities (elasticity, failover, etc.), eliminating the complexity of stream processing.

As a member of the MSF team you will be:

• working on making improvements to the stream processing engine (Apache Flink) to make the MSF service the de facto choice for running stream processing applications
• ensuring upstream compatibility as a core tenet of MSF service; your changes to improve the engine will be contributed back to open source
• improving efficiency and availability of the engine, adding ease-of-use features, and pushing the envelope of stream processing
• writing quality, reusable code for highly scalable and reliable cloud-based services
• working closely with product and development management to architect the service
• being a champion for operational excellence by insisting on the highest standards
• writing code that continuously improves service reliability and availability

To be successful in this role, you should have experience working on large-scale systems, enjoy solving complex software problems, and possess analytical, design, and problem-solving skills. While not necessary, experience with data processing technologies such as Apache Flink, Apache Spark, Apache Storm, or Hadoop frameworks is a plus.

On-Call Responsibility

This position involves on-call responsibilities, typically for one week every two months. We strive for fault-tolerant systems to avoid paging in the middle of the night or on weekends. When paged, we work together to resolve the root cause so that we don’t get paged for the same issue again.

As a member of the UC organization, you’ll support the development and management of Compute, Database, Storage, Internet of Things (IoT), Platform, and Productivity Apps services in AWS, including security-focused solutions for cloud services.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

• 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
• 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture experience (design patterns, reliability, and scaling) of new and existing systems
• Experience programming with at least one software programming language

Preferred Qualifications

• 3+ years of full software development lifecycle experience, including coding standards, code reviews, version control, build processes, testing, and operations
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $129,300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $223,600/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
