Overview

Amazon Web Services (AWS) seeks a detail-oriented Data Center Chief Engineer (CE) to join the Data Center Engineering Operations Team. The CE maintains the critical physical infrastructure that supports AWS data centers, ensuring 100% availability of MEP systems while delivering top‑class customer service.

Key Responsibilities
  • Act as primary escalation point for all facility‑related issues, overseeing routine and emergency services on critical systems (switchgear, generators, UPS, power distribution, chillers, cooling towers, air handlers, building monitoring).
  • Perform root‑cause analysis and troubleshooting of equipment failures within internal Service Level Agreements.
  • Provide training and guidance to Engineering Operations Technicians; collaborate with Facility Manager to set team culture.
  • Create and deploy new standard practices for technicians, chief engineers, and vendor support teams.
  • Assist in build‑out of new facilities and projects to increase existing facility efficiency.
  • Work outside normal business hours for routine maintenance and respond to out‑of‑hours emergency calls.
  • Communicate complex technical information to non‑technical audiences.
  • Coordinate projects with IT managers and other leaders to manage capacity, optimize plant safety, performance, reliability, and efficiency.
  • Ensure all safety procedures are adhered to by vendor and Amazon staff.
  • Establish building performance benchmarks, conduct analyses, and prepare reports on all aspects of critical facility operations and maintenance.
  • Utilize Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook and other administrative tools for day‑to‑day tasks.
Physical Requirements
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 39 pounds independently; participate in group lifts for 40+ pounds.
  • Maintain balance and perform construction tasks while on a ladder.
  • Walk, use hands and fingers, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, climb stairs, twist, bend, work above shoulders, grasp, carry, push and pull objects into position.
  • Work in an environment requiring provided ear protection.

Basic Qualifications
  • 3+ years of relevant technical position, or 2+ years of professional or military experience.
  • 3+ years of electrical or mechanical experience.
  • 3+ years of data center or mission‑critical facilities experience (e.g., hospital, military facility, public safety facility).
Preferred Qualifications
  • 4+ years of data center engineering experience.
  • Associate’s degree or Bachelor’s degree.
  • Experience in team leadership.
