Senior Cardiac Radiographer (part-time)

Main area Cardiac Radiographer Grade NHS AfC: Band 6 Contract Permanent Hours Part time – 31.5 hours per week (Wednesday to Friday 8hrs days and a 7.5hr day – open for discussion).

The aim of this role is to provide high quality, effective Imaging services within cardiology including Cath Lab Angiography (electrophysiology, pacing, structural heart and coronary intervention).

The post holder will work closely with (on completion of training) radiographers, clinical staff, students of all grades in providing safe, prompt and effective imaging.

To deliver expert radiological services, acting as a specialist in this area (on completion of training) and a resource to provide advice within the department.

The post holder will possess good inter-professional communication skills which are essential for liaising with other radiographers, doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers at all levels of seniority.

Radiographers assist in all patient care needs in all the cardiac catheter laboratories. Influencing factors include the skills needed to provide patients or relatives with empathy and emotional support for the bereaved.

To participate in (on completion of training) the Governance of the Department in areas including Risk Management, Health and Safety, Research and Audit activities reporting any issues to Superintendent Cardiac Radiographer.

The service operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Main duties of the job
  • Act as a named operator (Duty holder) under IR(ME)R 2017 regulations with scope of practice defined within departmental competency documentation (on completion of training).
  • Be responsible for all aspects of Radiation Protection during Catheter Laboratory procedures.
  • Ensure all patient demographics, imaging and data inputs are accurately recorded for patient record integrity, imaging recall and statistical evaluation purposes in relevant books and systems.
  • Carry out clinical duties in safety and compliance with local agreed protocols (on completion of training).
  • Set up/maintain/administer intravenous contrast media using a pressure injector/manually as directed by a prescribing practitioner (on completion of training).
  • Participate in the safe transfer of patients and equipment within the department and Hospital, using manual handling guidelines and risk assessments.
  • Enter accurate patient and examination data into x‑ray equipment and relevant associated systems e.g. ChangeHealth.
  • Work potential shifts as part of the contracted hours per week, work unsupervised within the out‑of‑hours arrangements (on completion of training) and participate in the on‑call service rota.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  • Act as a named operator (Duty holder) under IR(ME)R 2017 regulations with scope of practice defined within departmental competency documentation (on completion of training).
  • Evaluate and take professional responsibility for the quality, accuracy and adequacy of their own completed examinations.
  • Liaise with the Practitioner where clarification is required regarding selection of the most clinically appropriate imaging protocol (on completion of training).
  • Be responsible for all aspects of Radiation Protection during Catheter Laboratory procedures.
  • Ensure all patient demographics, imaging and data inputs are accurately recorded for patient record integrity, imaging recall and statistical evaluation purposes in relevant books and systems.
  • Recognise a variety of complex cardiac anatomy and pathologies and adapt protocol and radiological views as necessary (on completion of training).
  • Participate in patient resuscitation in the emergency setting.
  • Ensure that all clinical duties are carried out in a manner that ensures safety and compliance with any locally agreed protocols (on completion of training).
  • Ascertain from the patient, patient’s guardian or the practitioner, patient’s suitability for receipt of intravenous contrast media.
  • Set up/maintain/administer intravenous contrast media using a pressure injector/manually as directed by a prescribing practitioner (on completion of training).
  • Participate in the safe transfer of patients and equipment within the department and Hospital, using manual handling guidelines and risk assessments.
  • Demonstrate partnership in professional development by maintaining a high level of knowledge and technical skills through personal CPD (on completion of training).
  • Adapt and quickly respond to changes in service, patients and department need and undertake other duties as and when required by service demands or Superintendent.
  • Enter accurate patient and examination data into x‑ray equipment and relevant associated systems e.g. ChangeHealth.
  • Work potential shifts as part of the contracted hours per week, work unsupervised within the out‑of‑hours arrangements (on completion of training) and participate in the on‑call rota.
  • Effectively liaise with all disciplines of staff within the Cardiology/Trust.
  • Report deficits in the data integrity of the Information systems to Superintendent e.g. ChangeHealth, in use in the department.
  • Report clinical, non‑clinical and radiation incidents in line with Trust and Departmental Risk Management policies to Superintendent (on completion of training).
  • Attend departmental meetings as required.
  • Operate accurately and safely highly complex radiological equipment, requiring a high degree of manual dexterity (on completion of training).
  • Ensure all piece of equipment faults are brought to the attention of the appropriate Superintendent or Senior member of staff, in a timely fashion.
  • Participate in out of hours duties (on completion of training).
  • Trouble‑shoot equipment faults and assist in making suitable provision for the service in the event of equipment failure (on completion of training). Notify the Superintendent Radiographer of the fault. Ensure records surrounding such events are maintained.
  • Ensure that issues or problems, such as conduct or capability are reported to the Superintendent Radiographer.
  • Ensure personal professional regulatory and accreditation requirements are maintained.
  • Undertake Medical Devices training, and adhere to the Trust’s policy in undertaking regular up‑date and review of equipment operation.
  • Attend mandatory training sessions arranged by the department. (Fire, Resuscitation, Moving & handling, Control of infection).
  • Be responsible for the maintenance of Cardiac Catheter Laboratory records and enable them to be utilised for audit and Clinical Governance purposes (on completion of training).
  • Ensure that adequate levels of stock are maintained within the Cardiac Catheter Laboratories, ensuring that any problems or issues are reported to the Superintendent Cardiac Radiographer.
  • Have a professional and friendly approach to all visitors, students and members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Undertake digital archiving procedures in accordance with agreed protocols and the application of precise post processing manipulations.
  • Accurately record data on the Cardiology Information Systems and comply with the Data Protection Act.
  • Initiate and participate in audit including contribution to imaging data collection.
  • Contribute to practice development in reaction to the findings of audit and recent evidence, implement recommendations, and monitor their effectiveness.
  • Comprehend and adhere to the requirements of IR(ME)R 2017 and IRR.
  • Assist the Superintendent Radiographer in the prevention of High radiation dose procedures and produce and follow a revised protocol devised here in Blackpool and followed by all Tertiary centres and DGH’s in the North West.
  • At all times behave in a manner appropriate to the professional code of conduct of a State Registered Radiographer.
  • Perform any other radiographic or allied duties as required by the Superintendent Radiographer consistent with maintaining the efficient running of the Department.
  • Maintain commitment to CPD, keeping up to date with the latest developments, as required for Clinical Governance.
  • Ensure CPD portfolio is kept up to date.
Person specification
  • BSc in Radiographic Imaging or equivalent.
  • Registered with Health Care Professions Council + Evidence of CPD.
  • Post graduate qualification in Radiography.
  • Evidence of working independently at a senior level within a Cardiac Cath Lab environment.
  • Experience of working at an AfC 7 level within Cardiac Cath Labs.
  • Understanding of NHS developments/targets that will effect Cardiology.
  • Experience of working with a cardiology PACS/Radiology PACS and information system.
  • Possess extensive computer skills to enable management of PACS and storage systems.
