Overview

A Vacancy at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Clinical Fellow (ST4+ equivalent) Out of Programme Experience in Emergency Medicine and Palliative Medicine, based at the RDH site. This is a fixed-term, 12 month post and is an excellent opportunity. Any candidate who wishes to work less than full time will be considered and supported, taking into account service needs.

The RDH Emergency Department currently operates over two areas – the emergency department and a Blue Urgent Treatment Centre to provide excellent care for the patients in our community.

Responsibilities
  • Maintaining the highest clinical standards in the management of patients presenting to the Emergency Department.
  • Expected to prioritise and time-manage effectively according to the activity of the department and to utilise appropriately the available senior staff for advice.
  • Participation in the 24 hour Emergency Department rota.
  • Encouraged to complete work based place assessments for their own development.
  • Participation in ED specific teaching, training and support depending on career aspirations.
  • Taking the role of Team Leader in the management of patients with major injury or illness within the department.
  • Supervision of Junior Medical Staff and Emergency Nurse Practitioners including clinical work, time keeping and documentation.
  • Teaching of Junior Medical Staff, Medical Students and Emergency Nurse Practitioners in the clinical setting.
  • Assist to maintain the flow of patients through the department.
  • Be responsible for the management of the Emergency inpatients (Ward 101).
  • Undertake other responsibilities by mutual agreement with the Consultants as part of continuing professional development and clinical governance.
  • Opportunity to participate in Audit.
  • Designated Educational Supervisor for the duration of the post.

Post specifics

This is a Senior Clinical Fellow appointment in Emergency Medicine at the Royal Derby Hospital. The post will include an approximately 50:50 split of both clinical experience in the Emergency Department at the Royal Derby Hospital and dedicated time in palliative medicine. The post is intended to provide the clinician with Palliative Medicine experience and training. The post would be ideal for those who are a higher specialist trainee and seeking to improve their knowledge and experience in Palliative medicine.

The department has a strong track record in supporting a wide range of trainees. Our range of innovative workforce solutions coupled with education, mentorship and support have received national recognition, including RCEM ‘Clinical Team of the Year’ in 2017. This experience will be fully utilised to ensure that each successful applicant has individual support to ensure that their career aspirations are achieved. As part of this there will be a designated Educational Supervisor for the duration of the post. We would encourage the post holder to complete work based placed assessments to allow documentation of their own development. From a clinical perspective these posts will participate in the 24 hour Emergency Department rota with flexibility to accommodate individual personal requirements.

The appointee will be expected to work as part of a team with a responsibility to maintain the highest standards of emergency clinical care. Active participation in internal supporting professional activities such as Departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and Audit is essential.

The post is initially offered on a fixed term contract for 12 months, at the end of which the appointee will return to their training programme. The appointee will initially be entitled to 27 to 32 days annual leave per annum, plus 8 Bank Holidays, dependent on experience (based on a 5 day working week).
