Ward Manager – Hurst Place

Staffing: A secondment opportunity for a ward manager position on Hurst Place at Tameside General Hospital for a 6‑month period.

Hurst Place is a 15‑bed, mental health rehabilitation unit for males with complex and enduring mental health illnesses. Service users may also present with physical health conditions and other comorbidities.

Overview

The role involves clinical leadership alongside operational management.

Responsibilities
  • Clinical Team Management
    • Ensure effective working both as individuals and as a team.
    • Recruitment, retention, development, support and performance management of staff.
  • Service User Experience
    • Act as the clinical lead for the unit, leading the multidisciplinary team.
    • Ensure responsiveness to service user needs and robust clinical documentation.
  • Governance
    • Audit and evaluate services per Trust and Directorate policies.
    • Report to Governance and Clinical Business Unit meetings and the Clinical Services Manager.
  • Leadership Duties
    • Maintain personal contact with patients, relatives and carers; act as senior point of contact on the ward.
    • Formulate staff rotas to ensure effective use of manpower and resources.
    • Monitor staff sickness in accordance with Trust policies.
    • Enforce guidelines identified in Trust and National policies.
  • Patient Complaints
    • Investigate complaints, aim to settle with local resolutions; communicate to Service Manager if unresolved.
  • Staff Development
    • Maintain own personal development; lead junior staff training and education.
    • Lead annual performance reviews and personal development plans.
    • Ensure staff receive education in line with PREP and Scope of Professional Practice.
    • Support new staff via preceptorship and ensure learner nurses have assessors.
    • Act as mentor for learner nurses.
  • Recruitment and Selection
    • Coordinate and participate in recruitment of staff (Bands 1–6).
    • Participate in employment interviews and provide orientation to new staff.
  • General Duties
    • Undertake any other reasonable duty appropriate to the band.
    • Comply with all Trust and departmental policies.
    • Work towards Trust strategic goals.
