If so, and exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and dynamic Ward Manager to join our Ward 22/23 team .Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust is launching a new clinical model across our Acute Medicine and Acute Frailty services at Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) in November 2025. We are seeking motivated and compassionate nurses to join our team at the heart of this transformation

The new model introduces four specialist units designed to deliver high-quality, efficient and patient centred care. Staff will have the opportunity to work across all four areas, supporting development and providing broad clinical experience. These include

  • A dedicated Acute Assessment Unit (AAU), focused on rapid assessment , senior decision making and timely clinical assessment at the front door
  • An enhanced Acute Medicine Unit (AMU), delivering short stay care with strong emphasis on early discharge planning.
  • A Frailty Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit- a core part of a modern frailty service, designed to enable elderly patients to avoid admission and return home on the same day.
  • An Acute Frailty Unit (AFU), providing targeted, specialist multidisciplinary care for frail patients who require a short stay in hospital
Main duties of the job

Accountable to Head of Nursing

To be responsible for the planning, provision and delivery of an effective, 24-hour nursing service for the ward / department area. To manage, support and develop the ward / department team and ensure that nursing practice and procedures conform to identified NMC and Trust policies and standards.

To be a role model for all staff and ensure that the ward environment is a safe and effective learning area for staff and student nurses.

To be an advanced clinical practitioner and support and direct the educational and training needs of the nursing team to enable the provision of a patient focused, evidence / research- based nursing service.

To be responsible for making the patient the focus of care within the ward environment.

Job responsibilities

Personally deliver a high standard of care to a group of patients, acting as a team leader / named nurse and clinical role model at all times.

Continually assess, plan, implement and evaluate evidence-based programmes of care in order to ensure the provision of a high standard of care.

Ensure the provision of advice, support and health information to patients and their carers in order to promote a health-based service.

Transports / manages people and/or items such as equipment or specimens safely and to time consistent with legislation, policies and procedures.

Maintain accurate and legible records of all clinical and legal documentation to include accident / incident reporting, with regard to NMC, statutory and Trust polices.

Ensures all aspects of clinical care including interventions and investigations are performed, assessed and reported upon in a timely fashion and in a manner consistent with legislation, policy and procedures.

Person Specification
Experience
  • 1st level registration NMC ENB 998 / Adult mentorship course or working towards.
  • To have significant experience as a Band 6 staff nurse in an acute medical setting
  • To demonstrate knowledge of being up to date within the speciality - worked with learners in a supervisory capacity.
  • Excellent leadership and management skills.
  • Experience in managing complex governance patients' issues.
  • Experience in clinical audits
  • Diploma / Degree level study in a clinically relevant course i.e / Acutely ill Adult/ HDU course/Respiratory course
Knowledge
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, both verbal and written
  • Evidence of leadership skills - Able to formulate and verbalise views - Able to anticipate and forward plan.
  • Sound clinical knowledge
  • Experience as a Clinical Supervisor
  • Experience in respiratory nursing or having relevant respiratory training.
  • Experience in managing acutely ill patients
