Two Fellowships in Vitreo‑Retinal Surgery

BRISTOL EYE HOSPITAL

The Bristol Eye Hospital (BEH) at University Hospitals واش Bristol and Weston Foundation Trust (UHBW) is driving an ambitious future vision of care across Bristol and Weston. Applications are welcomed for two fixed‑term full‑time posts of Vitreo‑Retinal Surgery Fellows (specialty doctor band).energie.ilenggebracht.

Successful candidates must start as soon as possible in February/March; the second candidate is expected to start no later than April 2026.

This post provides advanced sub‑specialty experience in posterior‑segment surgery with an emphasis on surgical skills development. BEH is a highly regarded regional centre for ophthalmology and sits within the outstanding‑rated Division of Surgery at UHBW. The service delivers tertiary referral retina surgery and integrates closely with a medical retina service and a clinical research unit.

Fellows will support five vitreo‑retinal surgery consultants, complement Specialist Registrars and play an active role in running the firm, including managing emergencies and an on‑call commitment. They will gain experience in surgical retinal disorders, develop surgical skills, and participate in the department workload. ICH‑GCP training and contribution to research activity, including recruitment and running of clinical trials, are part of the role.

Location & Salary

Bristol Eye Hospital, Bristol, BS2 8ED. Salary £61,542–£99,216 a year pro‑rata. Full‑time fixed‑term 12‑month contract. Specialty Doctor grade.

Main Duties

Full‑time, initially 12‑months, designed to provide advanced sub‑specialty surgical experience and medicine. Fellows support the vitreo‑retinal team, assist in running the firm, and manage emergencies. They will obtain experience in retinal disorders with a focus on surgical skill development and will actively participate in department workload.

The appointee must undergo ICH‑GCP training and contribute to the department’s research activity, including participation in clinical trials.

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience
  • Completion of higher specialist training in ophthalmology (or appointment in the final year), with demonstrable interest in vitreoretinal disease and surgery.
  • Clinical experience appropriate to entry into advanced vitreoretinal subspecialty training, with evidence of progression and reflective learning.
  • Clear motivation to develop further surgical, clinical and academic skills within a structured fellowship environment.
Desirable
  • Prior exposure to vitreoretinal services or fellowship‑level training environments.
  • Evidence of sustained engagement in departmental activity beyond routine clinical delivery (e.g., teaching, audit, service development).
Skills and Abilities
  • Excellent communication skills, able to work constructively and respectfully with patients, consultants, trainees, nurses, optometr آباد, and allied health professionals.
  • Demonstrated ability to work reliably within a team‑based service, اكincluding engagement with rota commitments, handover processes and shared responsibility for service delivery.
  • Willingness to participate fully in departmental educational activity, including teaching, audit, quality improvement and clinical governance meetings.
  • Evidence of insight into personal strengths and limitations, with a commitment to supervision, feedback and progressive development.
