Job description
Overview

This post would be suitable for a senior maxillofacial trainee wishing to gain further experience in oral and maxillofacial surgery prior to a consultant appointment. It is envisaged that the successful applicant will have existing experience and be dual‑qualified. The Queen Victoria Hospital (QVH) is a well‑recognised regional maxillofacial unit, operating on a "hub & spoke" basis to provide services for a significant proportion of the South East.

The successful applicant will be exposed to elective and emergency oral and maxillofacial surgery patients and will gain experience in how to approach clinical situations from the initial consultation, through diagnosis, clerking, theatre preparation, post‑operative management and short, medium and long‑term outpatient follow‑up. The role follows the existing training pattern in oncology, deformity and trauma and will require attendance at theatre, oncology MDTs and consultants' clinics for both maxillofacial and urgent cancer referrals as well as clinic patients. If the successful candidate has sufficient experience, they will be expected to contribute to the teaching programme for junior staff and participate in audit and morbidity & mortality meetings.

Responsibilities
  • Manage elective and emergency oral and maxillofacial surgery cases – from initial consultation to post‑operative care.
  • Attend theatre, oncology MDTs, consultant clinics and urgent cancer referrals.
  • Contribute to the teaching programme for junior staff and participate in audit and M&M meetings.
  • Perform general ward care, maintain medical records and engage in clinical audit.
  • Participate in research activities and support the multidisciplinary team.
  • Actively take part in monthly clinical governance meetings, quarterly departmental training and a Tiered rota as follows: 1:6 on weekdays (including cover for colleagues' study/annual leave) and 1 in 9 weekend on‑call.
Training & Development

Working for QVH offers excellent opportunity to gain expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of the injured patient, consultant‑led ward rounds, theatre lists and outpatient clinics. The unit has a fully equipped maxillofacial laboratory on site and in‑house 3D planning facilities. We provide training and experience in all aspects of surgery – from initial diagnosis and treatment planning through detailed pre‑op planning, surgical technique to post‑operative care and follow‑up. Senior trainees with sufficient experience will contribute to teaching programmes and audit meetings.
