Job summary

Post from 5 August 2026 to 3 August 2027.

This 12‑month full‑time fellowship is for anaesthetists with at least three years of anaesthetic training. The post is fixed‑term, graded Doctor – other, with a salary of £52,291 to £54,843 per annum.

An additional tier of clinical fellows is recruited to manage the increase in acuity and out of hours work at the Royal London Hospital (RLH). This includes support for the increasing numbers and complexity of cases on the labour ward, the mechanical thrombectomy service, and the busy emergency theatre.

The fellow will also have the opportunity to acquire competencies in one of several surgical specialties at RLH (neuro, complex obstetrics, peri‑operative medicine and high‑risk pre‑assessment, regional anaesthesia, trauma anaesthesia, major abdominal surgery) and to develop their CV through QI projects or research. Each successful candidate will have a dedicated educational supervisor to support their career goals.

Main duties of the job
  • Work in a busy and supportive department in anaesthesia at ST 4+ level.
  • Take part in a 1:8, 1:9, or 1:10 rota, providing additional flexible anaesthetic cover at night.
  • Nighttime cover may include acting as an additional anaesthetist on the labour ward, covering mechanical thrombectomy, or covering the emergency theatres.
  • Support the Royal London Hospital’s improved services and new mechanical thrombectomy provision.
Person specification
Qualifications
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise medicine.
  • MBBS or equivalent.
  • At least three years of anaesthetic training.
  • Completion of an approved core anaesthetics training programme.
  • Primary FRCA / equivalent (or equivalent).
  • Desirable: minimum 2 years working in the NHS.
Knowledge
  • Experience in the peri‑operative care of patients, including pain management.
  • Audit experience.
  • Desirable: experience in the management of high‑risk surgical cases.
Teaching & Training
  • Involvement in teaching undergraduates, junior medical staff, nurses and allied health professionals.
  • Desirable: ATLS, ALS, APLS or PALS; involvement in undergraduate education.
Research
  • Understands research methodology.
  • Actively encourages research with junior and other staff.
  • Actively participates in research.
  • Desirable: published or submitted research to indexed journals; experience of research presentations to learned societies on topics related to anaesthesia.
