Job description

Post from 5 August 2026 to 3 August 2027

This 6‑month post is a fellowship for anaesthetists with at least three years of anaesthetic training.

An additional tier of clinical fellows is recruited to manage the increase in acuity and out of hours work at the Royal London Hospital. The out‑of‑hours service focuses on supporting the increasing numbers and complexity of cases on the labour ward, the new mechanical thrombectomy service, and the busy emergency theatre at RLH.

The post also offers the opportunity for a clinical fellow to obtain competencies in one of a number of surgical specialties undertaken at RLH (e.g. neuro, complex obstetrics, peri‑operative medicine, high‑risk pre‑assessment, regional anaesthesia, trauma anaesthesia, major abdominal surgery) and to develop their CV by undertaking QI projects or research. In addition, each successful candidate will have a dedicated educational supervisor to support their career goals.

Job responsibilities

Work in a busy and supportive department in anaesthesia at ST 4+ level.

The applicant will take part in a 1:8, 1:9, or 1:10 rota and will allow the site to have additional flexible anaesthetic cover at night.

Night‑time cover would potentially include acting as an additional anaesthetist on the labour ward providing cover for mechanical thrombectomy or covering the emergency theatres.

Qualifications

Essential
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice medicine
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • 3 years of anaesthetic training
  • Completion of an approved core anaesthetics training programme
  • Primary FRCA / Equivalent
Desirable
  • Minimum 2 years working in the NHS

Knowledge

Essential
  • Experience in the peri‑operative care of patients including pain management
  • Audit experience

Teaching & Training

  • Involvement in teaching undergraduates, junior medical staff, nurses and allied health professionals

  • ATLS, ALS, APLS or PALS
