Overview

Travel Trainer – Southampton, Hampshire. Contract: 3 months initially. Hours: 37 per week. Rate: £18 per hour (umbrella) (£14 PAYE per hour). Start: ASAP.

About the role

Southampton City Council is seeking a motivated and adaptable Travel Trainer to join our team on a temporary basis. This is a fantastic opportunity to support children and young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) in developing independence and confidence through safe travel training.

About ITT

The Independent Travel Training (ITT) programme helps young people gain the skills and confidence to travel safely by walking, cycling, and using public transport.

Responsibilities
  • Work directly with children and young people on a one-to-one basis across the city to deliver personalised ITT programmes.
  • Deliver group ITT sessions and presentations (up to 20 students).
  • Promote and develop the concept of ITT with schools, parents, carers, and key partners.
  • Design tailored travel training programmes to meet individual needs.
  • Ensure forms, processes, and procedures are in place to support the effective delivery of ITT.
  • Provide robust management information and evaluation of programme outcomes.
  • Identify potential clients, overcome barriers to participation, and secure the necessary sign-ups and permissions.
  • Work in partnership with stakeholders to ensure the safe and effective delivery of ITT.
Typical training hours

Typical training hours fall between 07:30–10:00 in the morning and 14:00–16:30 in the afternoon, although some flexibility may be required.

  • Experience working with children and/or young people with SEND.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively at all levels.
  • The confidence and adaptability to deliver both individual and group training.
  • A proactive and organised approach to planning and delivering programmes.
