Brief Description

Looking to fast-track your career into a safety-critical Technician role? Network Rail is investing in your development through a 12-week accelerated programme with Euston Delivery Unit on the West Coast South route.

Covering one of Britain's busiest rail corridors from Crewe to London Euston, our S&T teams support millions of passengers every year and help move around 10% of the nation’s freight. You’ll play a vital role in keeping the railway safe, reliable and moving.

Successful candidates will join as Operative (Trainee Technician) and begin with a 3-month intensive training programme on a fixed-term contract. On successful completion, you will move into a permanent Operative role, where you will continue to train for a minimum of a further 3 months (or longer if required) to build and demonstrate the right competencies to progress into a Technician position.

This structured pathway is designed to support your development at every stage, giving you the skills, experience and confidence needed to succeed in a critical frontline railway role.

About the role (External)
The Fast Track to Technicians Programme

The 12-week programme will combine classroom learning, eLearning, and hands-on practical experience.

Training includes:

  • SES1, SES2 and SES3 technical training
  • PTS, manual handling and working at height
  • Practical trackside experience with experienced trainers
  • Specialist training in points fitting and HW2000 equipment

Training will take place at Watford and Purley, starting from MayJune 2026. Travel to training sites will be covered as part of the programme.

What You'll Do as an S&T Technician

As a Technician, you'll work on signals, points systems and level crossings, carrying out maintenance, testing and fault-finding to keep the railway operating safely. The role involves shift working, including nights and weekends, and working outdoors in all weather conditions.

Who We're Looking For

We're seeking individuals with experience in electrical, signalling or engineering environments who can work safely as part of a team, communicate clearly, plan proactively and show the potential to step into future leadership roles.

You'll need:

  • A full Category B manual driving licence
  • Flexibility to work shifts, including nights and weekends
  • A strong commitment to safety and risk awareness
