Job description
Role Overview

This role is for a Trainee Clinical Nurse Endoscopist, who already has relevant experience and knowledge within the Endoscopy department setting.

The role will be for a trainee AfC Band 7 clinical nurse Endoscopist to join the team scoping patients within the trust framework for patient safety. Upon successful completion of training and being signed off, the role will progress to an 8a.

Please refer to the job description and job specification for more in-depth details and requirements.

This is a highly complex, highly specialised Clinical Endoscopist role with responsibility for the assessment of care needs for patients within the post holder’s care, diagnosing and treating disease processes identified through the endoscopy pathway. It involves the promotion of clinical excellence in practice through the implementation of research evidence‑based care and NICE guidelines.

Being responsible for the day‑to‑day function of their own caseload, the Endoscopist will assess, implement and direct endoscopy cases, liaise with all members of the MDT, patients and their families, and lead endoscopy sessions.

Work autonomously as a Clinical Endoscopist once qualified to deliver a differential diagnostic GI endoscopy service, including delivering life‑changing diagnoses, initiating treatment, and breaking bad news. The option to develop therapeutic GI endoscopy may be discussed.

  • Administer local anaesthetic and IV sedation to patients undergoing endoscopy in accordance with Trust policies and group protocols.
  • Take endoscopic biopsies and update and act on histopathology reports to form an accurate diagnosis.
  • Establish safe practice in the delivery of a broad range of therapeutic endoscopic procedures, including highly complex interventions.
  • Provide accurate endoscopy reports to enable appropriate treatment and care.

Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is an integrated Trust and the only provider of NHS acute care in Walsall, serving a population of 284,300. It provides inpatient and outpatient services at the Manor Hospital as well as a wide range of services in the community. The £170 million development completed in 2010 and ongoing upgrades mean the Trust now has state‑of‑the‑art facilities, including a Critical Care Unit, Neonatal Unit, Obstetric Theatre and Integrated Assessment Unit. A new Urgent and Emergency Care Centre, opened in March 2023, has significantly improved emergency care facilities and capacity, providing almost 5,000 m² of additional clinical space.

Please note this is a training post starting as an AfC Band 7, later progressing to an 8a once all required competencies have been met and the candidate is fully qualified.
