About the role

Balfour Beatty has an exciting opportunity for a Temporary Works Design Engineer to join our Regional team to work across our UKCS Regional Civils (East, North West, Central South East and South) side of the Balfour Beatty Business based out of our Leeds or Warrington office.

This role will cover multiple projects across different locations, which offers a variety of exposure to our exciting portfolio of projects. We are looking to build a strong technical hub within the Balfour Beatty UKCS Regional Civils Temporary Work department. We are looking for a technically strong, ambitious, energetic Temporary Works design engineer who is seeking to develop themselves and help create strong technical capabilities within the team.

What you\'ll be doing

As a Temporary Works Design Engineer, you will be responsible for:

  • Undertaking temporary works design and checking for individual projects either independently or under the supervision of a senior engineer including:
  • Site establishment
  • Haul roads
  • Working platforms
  • Service protection slabs
  • Shoring solutions
  • Earthworks excavation and slope stability
  • Formwork/ falsework
  • Temporary bridges
  • Scaffolding and edge protection
  • Rebar cage stability
  • Propping

You will:

  • Ensure internal and subcontractor designs comply with the temporary works design brief and are delivered within the required timescale.
  • Ensure design risks are considered and prepare Designers risk assessments, communicating residual design risks as appropriate.
  • Be responsible for the completion of technical approval documents including Approval in Principles (AIPs) for Highways and Form C documents for Network Rail.
  • Provide support to both site and office-based teams involved with temporary works to ensure compliance with the Balfour Beatty Temporary Works Management Procedure.
  • Provide technical support to work winning teams on the “buildability” of the design proposals and the development of safe, innovative and cost-effective temporary works solutions.
  • Actively supports the Balfour Beatty values of Integrity, Teamwork, Excellence and Respect

Who we\'re looking for

This role requires an individual with the following qualifications, knowledge, experience and personal qualities:

  • A degree or HNC or equivalent in civil or structural engineering. Able to demonstrate a clear understanding of engineering principles.
  • Post graduate experience including either design (temporary and/or permanent works design) or site experience.
  • Has some experience of site based activities and a knowledge of proprietary equipment commonly used in temporary works applications.
  • An awareness of current design standards and codes of practice, and published guidance documents relevant to temporary works.
  • Conversant with the management and procedures associated with temporary works as defined in BS5975: 2019.
  • Able to establish good working relationships with both work colleagues and external technical consultants and suppliers.
  • Able to clearly and confidently communicate engineering ideas and principles both verbally and in writing.
  • Working experience of AutoCAD, and various others design software packages (i.e. Hilti profis, Tensar, Beam Pal/ RMD Beam, GFSafe, WALLAP, ROBOT and Geo 5 software packages) used for Temporary Works designs and checks.
  • Working towards full membership of an appropriate professional institution (ICE or IStructE).
