Overview

Beacon Primary Care is an innovative practice based across West Lancashire. We are looking for a medical receptionist to join our busy team, serving around 17,000 patients in the West Lancashire area. The successful candidate will be an excellent communicator, highly motivated with the skills to undertake a variety of reception duties to aid in the smooth running of the practice. This is a proactive receptionist role in a fast-paced primary care environment. We are recruiting full time but would consider part time for the right applicant.

Main duties

Our receptionists are important members of the team and ensure the smooth running of the surgery. You will need the ability to signpost patients and also be able to listen. Duties may include, and can vary: opening up/locking up of practice premises, maintaining security; maintaining and monitoring the appointments system; processing personal and telephone requests for appointments, visits and telephone consultations; directing callers to the appropriate healthcare professional; processing and distributing mail; taking messages; computer data entry and data collation; initiating contact with patients and other team members; clearing consulting rooms; providing clerical assistance to practice staff.

Job Summary: The purpose of the role is to offer general assistance to the practice team and project a positive and friendly image to patients and visitors, in person or by telephone. Receive, assist and direct patients to access the appropriate service or healthcare professional in a courteous, efficient and effective way. Undertake a variety of administrative duties to support the smooth running of the practice, including secretarial and clerical support to clinical staff. Facilitate effective communication between patients, the primary health care team, secondary care and other healthcare agencies.

Duties and Responsibilities: The duties may include any or all of the items listed below, varied under the direction of the Senior Receptionist/Deputy Practice Manager, depending on workload and staffing levels:

  • Opening up/locking up of premises and maintaining security per practice protocols
  • Maintaining and monitoring the practice appointments system
  • Processing personal and telephone requests for appointments and directing callers to the appropriate professional
  • Processing and distributing mail
  • Taking messages and passing on information
  • Scanning
  • Computer data entry/data allocation and collation; recording information per practice procedures
  • Initiating contact with patients, other team members and healthcare agencies
  • Clearing consulting rooms
Person Specification

Qualifications (Essential): A sound general education to GCSE level or equivalent; experience dealing with the general public (customer service); good grammar and spelling; ability to produce accurate and thorough work, including filing; computer literacy with good keyboard skills; friendly and approachable manner; clear and effective communication (written and verbal); good administrative and organizational skills; adaptable and flexible; ability to work calmly under pressure and handle multiple demands; ability to maintain confidentiality; ability to work well in a team and influence others positively; regular attendance; commitment to high-quality service for a diverse population.

Desirable: Training or qualifications in customer service or IT; experience in healthcare settings; clerical experience.
