As part of exciting growth plans, they are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Technical Manager to lead laboratory and technical functions.
Role Summary
The Technical Manager is a pivotal leadership role, responsible for steering the technical strategy and daily laboratory operations. Reporting directly to the Managing Director, you will be instrumental in driving innovation, ensuring regulatory compliance, and optimising quality control to support the company’s short, medium, and long‑term objectives. Your leadership will be critical in fostering a high‑performance culture within the technical team and collaborating cross‑functionally to achieve business goals.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic & Operational Leadership:
- Develop and drive the technical strategy forward, ensuring alignment with business objectives.
- Lead key strategic projects from conception through to completion.
- Manage the daily operations of the technical department, taking a hands on role including some bench top technical work.
- Attend and contribute to daily operational meetings and monthly management meetings.
- Provide detailed and accurate reports on departmental performance, project status, and key metrics.
Technical Excellence & Innovation:
- Manage and drive the New Product Development (NPD) pipeline to support business growth.
- Develop and maintain cost‑effective product formulations without compromising on quality.
- Provide robust, prompt, and accurate colour matching services for customers.
- Continuously improve departmental systems, processes, and time‑saving measures to enhance team efficiency and effectiveness.
Quality & Compliance:
- Ensure the business is fully compliant with all relevant industry and product regulations.
- Act as the primary point of contact for 3rd party regulatory bodies and industry associations to provide quality, timely and robust advise supporting the business.
- Establish, implement, and maintain robust Quality Control (QC) procedures for all products produced and shipped.
- Guarantee that all processes and procedures are supported by clear and current Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
People & Stakeholder Management:
- Lead, manage, and develop all laboratory and technical staff.
- Conduct regular team meetings and constructive 1‑2‑1 sessions to support team and individual performance and development.
- Foster a positive, productive, and collaborative working environment within the technical team.
- Implement succession planning to ensure long‑term team strength and stability.
- Build and maintain strong, effective relationships with key internal personnel, including Production and Sales teams.
Person Specification
Essential Experience & Skills:
- Proven experience in a senior technical management role within a relevant manufacturing industry (e.g., inks, coatings, paints and varnishes, or similar).
- A strong background in formulation chemistry, product development, and colour science.
- Demonstrable experience in managing regulatory compliance and liaising with external regulatory bodies.
- Expertise in establishing and maintaining robust quality control and assurance systems.
- A track record of successfully leading and developing high‑performing technical teams.
- Excellent project management skills, with the ability to lead multiple, strategically important projects.
- Experience in developing cost‑effective liquid printing ink formulations.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships and influence at all levels throughout the business.
