The Governors wish to appoint an excellent Teacher of Health & Social Care, Child Development and Sociology for this fixed term post. This post is full‑time and should appeal to both recently qualified teachers and more experienced candidates who are looking to develop further in an outstanding school. Applicants do not necessarily need to have a qualification in Health & Social Care, Child Development or Sociology; related disciplines will be considered.

St Mary's is a great place to work and provides excellent job satisfaction in a very supportive environment. We provide outstanding CPD for ECTs and recently qualified teachers as well as ongoing training for more experienced teachers. There are opportunities for teachers at all levels to develop teaching and learning across the school, working collaboratively with teachers from other departments, whether as coaches or researchers. The working environment is therefore a very stimulating one for all staff and is an added attraction of this post.

St Mary's is a very popular school, rated Outstanding by the Diocese and Ofsted. We enjoy outstanding facilities in a building that opened in 2011 and joined the Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust in June 2020. We are popular with parents and are one of the most over‑subscribed schools in the North‑East. The roll has grown from around 1100 five years ago to over 1450 by September 2025, with five main school year groups of about 235‑240 and a Sixth Form of approximately 300 students. We expect the Sixth Form to continue to grow in the next couple of years as strong academic year groups continue to move into the Sixth Form.

Recent Highlights
  • BTEC Health and Social Care students have 83% Distinction or Distinction grades in 2025, with 94% Merit or better
  • 94% of BTEC Children's Play, Learning and Development students achieved a Merit or better over the last 5 years, with 71% Distinction or better.
  • 50% grades A‑B in A Level Psychology over the last 5 years, with 86% A‑C in 2024.
  • 51% of Sociology students achieved at least a grade B over the last 4 years, with 81% A‑C in 2024.
