Overview
We are seeking a compassionate care worker to support a young man with severe learning disabilities and autism. The role involves providing 24/7-style support to enable him to live in his own home and access leisure pursuits in the community. The individual’s interests include music, car rides, church bells, steam trains and jet aeroplanes. Person Centred Care and Positive Behaviour Support are central to our ethos. Training will be provided for handling challenging behaviour, when required.
Responsibilities
- Support and/or prompt with personal care (toileting, showering/bathing, getting in and out of bed, getting dressed).
- Support and/or prompt with cooking/meal preparation and eating meals/drinks.
- Support and/or prompt the individual to take medication.
- Assist with household chores and general homemaking.
- Support and/or prompt the individual to access sporting and leisure activities.
- Assist and encourage socialisation and participation in activities.
- Promote and encourage friendships and independence.
- Develop a good and trusting one-to-one working relationship.
- Support with gardening.
- Be honest, reliable, trustworthy and punctual.
- Maintain confidentiality and respect privacy, including the prohibited use of social media in relation to the job role.
- Work on own initiative and as part of a team; follow instructions accurately.
- Be patient, supportive and caring; provide non-judgemental emotional support and be empathetic.
- Have a genuine interest in supporting people with a disability/illness to achieve their goals; previous caring experience is welcome but not essential.
- Be flexible and able to adapt to the employer's needs on a daily basis; flexibility with hours is advantageous.
- Be self-motivated and willing to get involved; maintain a lively, positive personality.
Requirements
- Only candidates over the legal age should apply for this position as you may be required to administer medication.
- You may be required to perform other duties as reasonably required.
- You are responsible for reporting all accidents to the employer immediately and reporting defects or hazards to ensure safety at all times.
- Sleep-ins are required as part of the shift pattern.
Hours and Shifts
- Hours per week: 22 hours + 1 sleeping night, increasing to 2; further hours available to cover holidays.
- Day shifts: 12:00–17:00 or 12:00–20:00.
- Night shifts: 20:00–22:00 ordinary hours, 22:00–07:00 sleeping, and 07:00–12:00 ordinary hours (7 hours plus a sleeping night).
- The applicant would not work all of the days Monday to Saturday but a combination of shifts adding up to 32 hours + 2 sleeping nights increasing to 2.
- Dates and times are flexible and can be discussed at interview.
