Superintendent / Obstetric Lead Sonographer

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly experienced individual to lead the Ultrasound Services at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital and Ysbyty Cwm Rhondda. We are looking to fill a full time post and will consider job share options.

The successful candidate will be responsible for a team of 14 Sonographers providing ultrasound services across 9 scanning rooms on 2 sites.

There is a wide range of ultrasound scanning equipment which includes Canon, GE, Siemens, Samsung and Philips manufacturers.

The Ultrasound Team has a diverse skill mix with independent reporting sonographers undertaking examinations of the Abdomen, Pelvis, Trans‑vaginal, Testes, Vascular and Obstetrics including all 3 trimesters and screening, mobile examinations and acute services.

We support role development with sonographers being skilled in MSK, Neo‑natal Hip Screening and TRUS biopsies.

The Royal Glamorgan Hospital is easily accessible being on the M4 corridor with ample free parking facilities.

Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB hosts the National Imaging Academy Wales which provides us with excellent future development opportunities for our staff. We actively support monthly CPD meetings, regularly support external training for staff and we are keen to develop you professionally.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for service delivery within the Ultrasound department, to patients within Royal Glamorgan Hospital and Ysbyty Cwm Rhondda, Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB in a safe and effective manner. The postholder will work closely with Superintendent Sonographer colleagues at other CTM sites in order to support the ultrasound service across the Health Board.

Provide a caring and confidential diagnostic service to all patients, ensuring their dignity and privacy are not compromised.

Responsible for the day‑to‑day management of a comprehensive, efficient, relevant, and cost‑effective ultrasound service at base site, Royal Glamorgan Hospital and the associated community hospitals.

The postholder will be responsible for leading, managing and organising the Ultrasound service working collaboratively with Radiology Manager and Radiology Clinical Director.

The postholder will provide a lead for clinical development of professional ultrasound staff.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

The Radiology Directorate has a well‑established Governance Agenda which includes modality user Group Meetings on a quarterly basis. The aim of the user groups is to improve our patient centered service by encouraging collaborative working, discussing service/patient concerns, reviewing training strategies, reviewing/updating knowledge of relevant Policy, Procedure and Protocol and contributing to the Audit and Clinical Effectiveness agenda.

Person Specification
Qualifications and Knowledge
  • BSc in Radiography or equivalent
  • Post‑graduate qualification in Medical Ultrasound or equivalent
  • HCPC Registration
  • Knowledge of advanced practice within a wide area of specialist ultrasound applications to Master's level equivalency
  • Management Qualification or equivalent experience
Experience
  • Relevant personal history of continual development
  • Experience of supervising/managing and training sonographers and trainee sonographers at Masters level
  • Experience of advanced ultrasound clinical practice e.g. MSK, vascular, interventional
  • Counselling skills
Aptitude and Abilities
